Gordon Dickson is a cosmic trailblazer, a true pioneer of science fiction as a literary genre. The subjects of his fertile imagination are as varied and as vast as the universe itself. In this vintage collection of six masterfully told short stories, Gordon Dickson will enlighten, confound, and mesmerize you with his projections of a post-holocaust America, the disintegration of technological society, forced emigration as a means of relieving overpopulation, and problems of legality that arise when dealing with various interstellar communities.A fascinatingly speculative excursion, In Iron Years presents science fiction as no other author has yet to see it: filled with intimations of a future that is already here. Sometimes a secret goes to the grave. Sometimes Secret puts you there. It’s been a hell of a year for Secret McQueen, and the last thing in the world she wants is to get caught up in werewolf drama. But when her former fiancé Lucas Rain shows up asking for her help, she knows there’s no easy way out. After making it known she wants nothing to do with him, Secret agrees to help find Lucas’s wayward sister Kellen. After all, how much trouble could one socialite get into in the city that never sleeps? Unless that socialite has been spirited away by fairies. Trying to track down a missing girl in an alternate reality is just the start of Secret’s problems, though. Someone appears to be killing teenagers, and the MO looks eerily similar to something for which the half-fairy oracle, Calliope, might be responsible. Throw in a rogue wolf pack claiming allegiance to Secret’s mother, Mercy, and she’ll have miles to go before she rests. Warning: This book contains a promise fulfilled, sex that’s out of this world, and more heartache than one hybrid assassin can handle. Views: 362
A late night knock at a door starts a ‘Kafkaesque’ tale of confusion and frustration in this latest 4,000 word short story from British writer Colin Marks.A late night knock at a door starts a ‘Kafkaesque’ tale of confusion and frustration in this latest 4,000 word short story from British writer Colin Marks. This story came to me when I was at the bedside of my girlfriend who had just had a hip replacement only hours earlier. She explained she hadn’t been nervous before the operation as the doctor had come 'out of the blue' and told her they were ready for her. It was hours before she was expecting the operation to take place so she hadn’t had time for the anxiety to build! I’m sure the story is influenced by Dino Buzzati Traverso’s 'Seven Floors' or Franz Kafka’s 'The Trial', both of which I’d read a decade before, and are highly recommended. If you enjoyed this story, please try my others. And for those who are interested, the new hips are doing great! Views: 362

Grimm Afelnor, the youngest Mage Questor in Arnor House, has sworn to expunge the stain from his reviled family name. Along the way, Grimm has to kill a man, destroy a demon, conquer unwitting drug addiction and break free of magical infatuation cast by a young witch-nun. Grimm regards the wealth and title of Baron as more than ample recompense for his pains, but even more good fortune comes his way, when, soon afterwards, he becomes a Fifth Rank Mage Questor, due to a clerical oversight. Life for the young mage seems to be going his way. With a scaly titan, a mighty albino swordsman, an elven thief and a six-inch imp amongst his allies, and Grimm feels confident when ordered to assist in tackling a renegade General who seems to be abducting Guild Mages. His only problems are: the prejudiced and domineering senior mage, Questor Xylox; a young female pickpocket; and a mysterious, insidious sickness lurking in the Shest Mountains.
