Twenty-seven-year old Anne Elliot is Austen\'s most adult heroine. Eight years before the story proper begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain, he finds Anne\'s family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall, the Elliot estate. All the tension of the novel revolves around one question: Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited in their love? Jane Austen once compared her writing to painting on a little bit of ivory, 2 inches square. Readers of Persuasion will discover that neither her skill for delicate, ironic observations on social custom, love, and marriage nor her ability to apply a sharp focus lens to English manners and morals has deserted her in her final finished work. Sexy teleoperator Clarity Nice and her fashionably bohemian friend, Flower Parkwood, visit the Mexican area of Campeche to study native artifacts and ethnographic aspects of the Mayan culture in the small village of Miradorcito, only to find that this village of Mayan ancestry, its people and local traditions are under threat by an egyptologist who overtly wants ownership of the village land.Teleoperator Clarity Nice and her friend ethnographer Flower Parkwood, reach the decrepit and picturesque town of Miradorcito in the state of Campeche in Mexico. Brought to Campeche in a colorful guagua from a brief vacation in Cancun after exposing alcohol traffic in the British Virgin Islands (The Sugar Baby), Clarity becomes the assistant of Flower, using her 'permiso de arqueologia', an observation and archaeological dig permit granted by Flower's boss, egyptologist Akhris Zephairi. Zephairi's Alabastriah foundation is funded by the Museum of Cairo and a shady real estate developer from Belize, Levian Fahibian, who is looking for new areas to invest a pile of cash showing on the balance sheet of his company, Mangrove Barrier Resorts. Fahibian makes an offer to the elderly head of the village, Ms. Morales, to buy the land of her ancestors, in order to seek an obscure assortment of Mayan ruins buried under Miradorcito for decades and build where the village of Miradorcito is standing, a gambling resort similar to those found in Belize, and a Mayan historical village that will bring new tourist business to the area. This collection of Chekhov's finest early writing reveals a young writer mastering the art of the short story. 'The Steppe', which established his reputation, is the unforgettable tale of a boy's journey to a new school in Kiev, travelling through majestic landscapes towards an unknown destiny. 'Gusev' depicts an ocean voyage, where the sea takes on a terrifying, primeval power; 'The Kiss' portrays a shy soldier's failed romantic encounter; and in 'The Duel' two men's enmity ends in farce. Haunting and highly atmospheric, all the stories in this volume show a writer emerging from the shadow of his masters - Tolstoy, Turgenev and Gogol - and discovering his own voice. They also illustrate Chekhov's genius for evoking the natural world and exploring inner lives. Views: 832

Heywood "Woody" Allen: Over time, Allan Stewart Konigsberg and I have associated with each other. This is the first in a series of books compiling a few short stories we've distantly collaborated on throughout the past 25 years. I am a book ghostwriter and editor of long standing, and these "tall tales" reflect a variety of genres including horror fiction, humorous sci-fi and narrative nonfiction.Woody Allen has forever fascinated me as a friend, a mentor and a colleague. He is a humor writer par excellence whom I spoke with when I was 14, during a radio call-in show about the Holocaust. The next day, he sent me a two page letter, stating that he thought I should pursue a career in show business. I kept and treasured this handwritten, signed missive for years. Later on, he sent me another document, a book length "love letter" of sorts, where he told me about his life and what he thought I should be doing with mine. It contained an imaginary "duel" with Malcolm X - which Woody necessarily won!He was the main crush in my intellectual life, all through my teenage years. His Madison Ave., NYC humor writing career burgeoned, ballooned and grew, and we continued to correspond in writing, keeping tabs on each other. I considered him to be my Manhattan Jewish Rabbi, along with Jerry Lewis, who imitated my special midnight backflip once on camera. Jerry and I have worked extensively with seriously disabled adults and children, such as boys with muscular dystrophy. I worked for a man for several years who has both MD and cerebral palsy, as his certified nurse aide for in-home care. This is the first in a series of books compiling the short stories I've written over the past twelve or more years. Many of them were inspired by the works of Woody Allen, and the last story in this book was ghostwritten with some assistance from him. I am a book ghostwriter and editor of long standing, and these "tall tales" reflect a variety of different genres, including both fiction and nonfiction, which I wrote either for practice or in order to improve my own writing. Original, suspenseful epics; gripping, humorous, including horror, science fiction, narrative nonfiction, and a host of other topics as perceptively descriptive stories, which should help you perceive the Universe in a whole new intrinsically original and realistic baleful light. A short steampunk novel about the happenings around a factory where parts for airships are made...Welcome to Port Carmila, population 15, 725. Half that count isn’t even human, and that’s not including feral zombies, ghouls and ghosts, mostly because they don’t stand still long enough for counting. It’s a melting pot of the living, the immortal, and the dead … where death means you still have to pay the rent, the merfolk are experts in tax evasion, everybody hates the corny Dead Centre of Australia T-shirts sold at the tourist information centre, and the local police encourage you to carry a weapon at all times, regardless of legality. Sometimes the zombies aren’t your much-loved next-door neighbours…When Steve Nakamura is dared—after a long-standing Port Carmila tradition—to seduce a vampire in return for his birthday present, he thinks it will be easy. Scrub up, find a hot undead girl who won’t care that he’ll start shambling the moment he stops breathing, kiss her, earn enough money for a new car stereo. Simple, if he doesn’t mind losing a little blood in the process. The cute and anxious Abe Browning, however, is surely undead and just as surely not a girl, and, as it turns out, that’s the last thing Steve needs to worry about when it comes to hooking up with vampires… Views: 829

Equal parts social satire and fun loving adventure, Greegs promises laughs, a few mildly intelligent and/or interesting observations, & several run-on sentences. You'll also get to find out what the hell Greegs are, and how life on Earth came to be, and the meaning of it all (at no extra charge.)Greetings Earth creatures. This book has been dropped off on your planet for the purpose of... well, for you to read it. I'm not sure if you'll like it, I might not if I was you. I'd wager many of you won't be big fans. The investment banking community will especially be... put off by some of what is contained here. An advanced copy was sent to your virtual place of worship 'Reddit' and met with mixed results. While spending nearly a full day on the front page, many Earthlings voiced their stern displeasure with the book. Many others found it lovely. I'm not sure who I'm more concerned for. Either way this is a book I only meant to help with. I know sometimes books, words and ideas can make you humans angry; but then again, pretty much everything seems to do that. In the end, just remember it's only words in a book. Can't we all just get along and go for a swim instead? Views: 821
