Skullenia

Tony Lewis's hilarious Skullenia series, now available as a boxed set! BOOK I - WHEREWOLF Skullenia seems to be the last place that would need a detective agency. At least that is what Ollie thinks, until Count Jocular commissions him to help resolve a series of unexplained disappearances occurring within his realm. Ollie is a half-vampire who, following his uncle's death, inherits a detective agency in the undead town of Skullenia. He also inherits his uncle's staff: a zombie who can barely hold himself together (in more ways than one), a reanimate the size of a phonebox with an IQ to match, a mad professor, and their chain smoking friend Ronnie who has the ability to make himself invisible. Has Ollie bitten off more than he can chew? With the help of his motley crew and some quite frankly ridiculous characters, Ollie attempts to solve this perplexing mystery. BOOK II - CUP AND SORCERY The hunched figure sat on a three-legged wooden stool, hooded head leaning over the container. Eyes unblinking, it peered intently into the murky miasma. Hands were raised and sleeves folded carefully back, before fingers were waved over the bowl in intricate patterns. At the same time, whispered incantations passed from tight, dry lips, attempting to invoke the aid of some otherworldly power. Ollie and his crew are back! The Fibulan Museum has been burglarised and our intrepid detectives are appointed to solve the mystery, but they soon discover that this is no ordinary crime. During the course of their investigations, they find themselves undertaking a quest of quite literally epic proportions, in the hope that they will stave off disaster and avoid seeing Mrs. Ladle's legs. Can Ollie and his friends defeat the forces of darkness? Can they survive their treacherous journey? Can Flug have an intelligent thought without having a stroke? BOOK III - WUTHERING FRIGHTS Grendle the Shopkeeper has disappeared, and it's up to Ollie's crew to find him before it's too late! Narrowly missing a wandering splat of ectoplasm, or Bernard as he was more commonly known, with a deft side step, Ronnie entered the shop to the clanging of the little silver bell that hung over the door. His brow furrowed as he absently scratched his cheek. Grendle always came out after the tolling of the first bell. Always. Where was Grendle the shopkeeper? Later on, the local press are interviewing the Skullenian residents after an incident at the fountain whilst Noah and Gertie, a happy young couple, discover a dismembered corpse whilst taking a romantic, moonlit stroll through the cemetery. Are the strange events linked? Is anything else going to happen? Can I write any more of this nonsense without giving the game away? Someone's going to have find out what's going on, and in Skullenia that can only mean one thing. That's right! Ollie and the boys have another puzzle to solve. Do they unravel this mystery? Can they avoid the carnivorous attentions of Noggin, a rather special cat? And will Professor Crumble ever invent anything useful?

The Train to Paris

She entered the station, wearing a white leopard-print dress that was short enough to show off her legs. Her hair slid down the back of her neck in a curtain of gold, which shimmered as it passed through the updraught. There was a conspicuous ring on her finger. Her head turned and her eyes almost met with mine. I looked away. After a disastrous holiday with his girlfriend in Madrid, Lawrence Williams takes the train back to Paris where he is studying art history. Lawrence is twenty years old and discovering how to see the world, which means he doesn't mind too much when he gets stranded at the border. That's when Elodie Lavelle enters his field of vision. She might be twice his age but she's amused by the boy's earnest charm. She decides to entertain herself by educating him in the rules of her society, treating him to an unforgettable evening in Biarritz. But Elodie has not counted on what Lawrence might teach her in return, or how much their unlikely encounter will mark them both. The Train to Paris is a surprising and compelling love story.Sebastian Hampson was born in 1992 in Auckland, New Zealand. He grew up in Wellington, has lived in Europe, and is currently studying art history and literature at Victoria University. The Train to Paris is his first novel.textpublishing.com.au'Sebastian Hampson is that rare thing: a writer of ideas who is also compulsively readable.' Nicholas Edlin, author of The Widow's Daughter'Lyrical and elegant.' Waikato Times'Hilarious at times, sad too, and sometimes slightly shocking, the story grips from the beginning...The dialogue is sharp, and the changes in himself the young man experiences are both touching and realistic...This is a remarkable and sophisticated piece of writing for a young man in his early 20s. Sebastian Hampson is a writer to keep an eye open for.' Otago Daily Times'This book will charm and engage.' Books and Publishing'Hampson's prose superbly renders the atmosphere of summer in Biarritz and winter in Paris. His self-absorbed Lawrence is very believable, and some of the ancillary characters are also well-portrayed. This is a remarkable debut novel, and it will be interesting to see what Hampson comes up with next.' BookMooch

Kahiki Supper Club

Inspired by Florida’s famed Mai-Kai restaurant, Bill Sapp and Lee Henry opened the Kahiki Supper Club in 1961. They set out simply to build a nice Polynesian restaurant and ended up establishing the most magnificent one of them all. Patrons lined up for hours to see the celebrities who dined there—everyone from Betty White to Raymond Burr. Outside, two giant Easter Island heads with flames spouting from their topknots stood guard while customers dined in a faux tribal village with thatched huts, palm trees and a towering fireplace moai. One wall featured aquariums of exotic fish and another had windows overlooking a tropical rainforest with periodic thunderstorms. For nearly forty years, the Kahiki was the undisputed center of tiki culture.
