"When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide "[1]
T he large room, decorated almost entirely with posters of a Rockstar had two young friends, so close that looked like twin sisters, although they had no blood ties that unite them, and their personalities were opposite of each other. Angela Moore and Melissa Bittencourt were childhood friends, and while one had the personality of an angel, the other seemed to deal with something bad.
The pink-painted walls, allied with the delicate white furnishings, and all the feminine ornaments scattered about the room could provoke nausea to Lissa if it doesn’t form the perfect environment for her best and only friend. Yes, the overdose of gentleness and femininity shows that room was almost an extension of Ang's kind and passionate personality.
However, Lisa seemed out of place, visually. The dark clothes that she wore to wear, her black hair and emerald eyes lined with eyeliner made her appear inadequate for such sweet and familiar environment, just as she liked to be seen.
Arranging the sleeves of her leather jacket and making it cover her hands, she stopped in front of a life-size image of Gabriel Voss, the Rockstar by whom her best friend was fascinated. Lissa thought it a bit exaggerated and scary. She had no idol, it was true, but she believed that if she had it, she shouldn’t surround himself with images of a person and live sighing for it, without even knowing him at all.
“Do we really have to see this crap again?” Her white fingers lightly touched the singer's unchanging face. That silly grin irritated her deeply.
Angela looked up from the notebook on her lap and started to play the show of your favorite singer on TV, she smiled slightly and launched an angry look to her best friend.
"Do not hit him!" Ang's always gentle voice belied the seriousness with which she intended to speak.
With a sigh, Melissa turned her back to the pathetic play of Gabe Voss and threw herself into an armchair. As her friend was too busy, taking care of the online page dedicated to her idol, Lissa took her time poking the black enamel on her small nails.
"Oh ..." Angela sighed sadly.
“What?” Lissa hurried to her side. The green eyes focused on the fansite[2] open on the PC screen.
“Gabe leaves the city today...”
"Ang, I even knew that. You don’t talk about anything else since he came here to this blessed photoshoot. In some moment, he would have to leave.”
"Some fans are going to the airport to try to see him..." Angela purposefully ignored her friend's comment. “I wish to be there.”
The way the last sentence was spoked made Lissa sit next to her friend and take her hand.
“Let’s go…”
Angela smiled without excitement and shrugged.
"You know I can not."
"Why not? You look better today...”
Angela smiled and tried to push Lissa into a hug.
“Oh, really?” She said with a surprising good humor to someone in her situation. "My dark circles are even more pronounced today..."
"A little makeup and that's it. You know how good I am at this ...
"I do not have a handkerchief that makes me look like a rocker ..." Angela smiled and took one of her hands to the large lilac handkerchief that covered her shaved head.
“And? You have so many handkerchiefs, I'm sure we can find one less little girlie... Maybe that purple with white dots... I think you’ll look pretty with something who isn’t pink.”
Angela laughed heartily.
"Why do you hate pink?"
Lissa shrugged and responded with as much indifference as possible.
“I just do not like it.” And to keep the conversation out of her, she said: "So, are you going or not? To prove that I am a good friend, I even agreed to go with you.”
"You're a wonderful friend!" Angela squeezed the hand. "I'm still a little bit sick from the last chemotherapy session... I don’t want to end throwing up the hottest Rockstar."
"Oh, what a pity! I'd love to see it happen." It was not a true. Melissa didn’t care if Gabriel Voss had vomit on his body, but she cared how embarrassing her friend would feel.
"I'm going to miss you so much..." Angela said while smiled and hugged her friend again.
“Shut up!” Lissa said firmly, but did not interrupt the hug. "If you start again, I swear I'm leaving, and I'll be back only when you stop being so lazy. Get out of this bed, and follow me."
"You could not stay so far away from me." Ang pulled away. “I'm not going anywhere. You can do that makeup... I'd feel better.”
Lissa nodded, and took the collect of cosmetics she would need.
“Do something for me.” Angela spoke again while Lissa sat down in front of her again.
"I'm not going to draw Gabriel Vo
ss... Don’t ask it again!"
"Yes," Angela said with conviction. "I know you're going to do" She had seen her friend sketching the design she refused to do; but even if she hadn’t seen him, she knew that Lissa would please her, just because despite trying to hide behind the problematic girl posture, she was a wonderful person, and when she liked someone, she would do anything to make her happy. "But that's not what I want to ask”.
“What is it then?”
“Paint or draw something for me... Anything to reminds me to you.”
"That's easy ..." Lissa was concentrated in apply some makeup in her friend's face. "I just need to throw pink paint on a canvas."
Angela chortled.
Enjoying the moment of relaxation, Lissa used the eyeliner pencil, and pulled her friend's wrist closer to her. With her skill, she drew the symbol of infinity on clear and sensitive skin.
“Friends Forever!” Angela exclaimed while she looks her new impromptu tattoo. One more of what Lissa always did.
"Eternity reminds me of you ..." Melissa commented and turned her attention to the simple makeup she wore on her battered face.
"I’m not eternal, Lissa. One day I'll...”
“Shut up!”
"Do not talk about it will not make me live forever."
Lissa might said that in her heart, her friend would live forever, but it would be too emotional for someone who tried hard to make herself better. So, she decided to just change the subject.
"I think you should try a little darker shade today. It would look good in your eyes.”
“Forget the makeup. There's something I want more... even more than a Gabriel's painting. I want you to promise me that when I'm not here...”
“Damn it, Angela! I already told you...”
“Shut up and listen to me.” As it was rare for her friend to speak with such seriousness, Lissa fell silent and listened. "I want you to promise me that you will move, find a new friend... maybe even a boyfriend... Someone who will love you… I want you to promise me that you will try to be happy, and that you will not fall apart.
The request brought an overwhelming, familiar grip to Melissa's chest. That horrible feeling that always haunted her.
"I need to go to the bathroom ..." It was what the young brunette's answer.
"You don’t need..." Angela clasped one of her hands on her friend's arm. "And you will not find what you want there, if that's what you want."
“I just need a toilet. I'm sure your bathroom has one.”
With a weary sigh, Angela let Lissa get up.
"You have to stop it... It's too self-defeating."
Melissa forced a smile.
"I said a dark shadow would be nice..." Fleeing the subject and grinning, Lissa handed her friend a mirror and walked away.
Ignoring the reflection in the mirror, Angela looked sadly at Lissa. What frightened her about her illness was to leave her best friend alone. She was afraid she would not be able to see herself being destroyed. Fortunately, at least in that day, and as long as she had strength, she would find ways to help those who helped her. Ways like the simple act of hiding any kind of blade in her bathroom.
What Angela had no idea is that every day Melissa was becoming a specialist in masking her internal pains and frustrations with physical pain, whatever it was.
Locked in the bathroom of her friend's suite, Lissa didn’t even bother to look for a razor blade, which she knew she wouldn’t find. Just letting the water run down the lavatory, she removed the jacket, sweater, and belt herself without any hesitation until she reached the lean trunk with the leather strap. Her skin burned, but it was not enough. Then she repeated the movement more times until she felt exhausted. It was working. It was a relief without size. The pain in her skin masked that of the heart, and that was all she needed.
The girl just finished her self-flagging session when she heard Angela scream. Imagining that something bad might have happened, she just wore her blouse quickly and ran out of the bathroom.
The scene she encountered shocked her. Angela was out of bed, screaming and jumping. It was only when she looked at her friend's face that Lissa could see a smile, and finally understood that Angela was celebrating something.
“What’s happening?” Melissa questioned, exhausted by the beating she gave at herself and by the shock that Angela had given her. "Will you tell me Gabriel's plane crashed?"
Ignoring the scathing comment, Angela continued to celebrate, and excitedly pointed to the screen of her personal computer.
“You won!!”
“What did I win?”
"You won the contest, Lissa! You won! Oh my god! You won!”
"I'm not in any contest, Ang.”
"You're in... Or rather, you were and won. A contest to meet and travel on tour with Gabriel, the Rockstar, Voss.
“You're crazy? Why would I sign up for a dumb contest like that, if I do not even like the guy?”
“I wrote you...”
“What??”
“It’s a contest in thanks for the success of the last album. They launched a series of online challenges to discover who is the biggest fan... I just had to show my collection, answer some silly questions, send something to show love for him and his career... and they chose you. The result just came out. Come and see!”
With no reaction, Lissa saw her best friend back to bed and play in a video.
The image of Gabriel Voss filled the screen with his annoying smile.
"Hello!"
He smiled in that way all the fans liked, the way Lissa thought it was fake and forced. Angela sighed.
"Thank you so much for the thousands of entries in the Rock Tour contest.
I can’t believe that so many people want to know me..."
“Pretend!” Lissa grunted.
“Quiet!” Angela complained. “That's the best part...”
"Unfortunately, we can only choose one person ...
And that person is Melissa Bittencourt”
The brunette did not know if she was more shocked that he had said her name, or that he was holding a picture of her kissing the stupid banner that Angela kept in her bedroom.
“Fuck you! I just kissed this stupid banner because you fucked up a bet and lost it! But you could not take a picture and send it to him! Dammit!”
“Shiii!” Angela ignored her friend's blast. "He'll talk to you."
"I loved this photo! And it was she who made you win the contest ...
A whole tour together!
I hope you're happy for it.”
"Not at all, asshole!”
"The shows begin in a month, and I can’t wait to meet you, Mel!
See you at shows, guys!"
“I hate when call me Mel!” Lissa turned away from the computer when the player turned black.
“When you meet him, you can say that prefers Lissa”. Angela answered with a smile.
"You're crazy if you think I'm going to go to stay a lot of months away from home..."
“One year! And you hate your home!
"I also hate singers who think they're better than others."
"Gabriel is not like that!"
"You do not even know him, Angela.
“You don’t know him too...”
“And I do not even want to meet!” Melissa folded her arms. “Did I look like a fangirl[3] which is drooling over someone? I can’t believe you signed me up for this crap! Why did you write yourself?”
"Because I couldn’t go if I won..." Angela said sadly. “But you can! It's going to be like I'm there...”
"You just can be mad. I will not!”
“And why not? What's holding you here?
"I have a life, and you know it."
“And which life? We finished school. You did not want to go to university...”
"You didn’t too, and so what?"
“I couldn’t go. It's different from not wanting to go...”
“I work.”
"Oh, seriously, Lissa! You st
and at the bar just to don’t have to come home at night. Look, this is a fantastic opportunity to stay a year away...”
“It will be a year away from everything I like...”
"And what do you like about this town?"
Melissa didn’t answer. She didn’t need to, Angela understood immediately.
"I promise not to die until you return." She commented with morbid amusement. "I'll wait for you to tell me everything."
“Argh!” Lissa rolled her eyes. "I hate it when you make these jokes! And don’t hold your breath because I will not do it, Ang! You couldn’t have done it without telling me anything before.”
"If I did, you would not accept"
Lissa was about to say that she still without accept, and all her friend's efforts had been in vain, but her cellphone chose that moment to play. Before she could move, Angela was already picking up the phone in her friend's bag.
“Restricted number. It could be him or someone from his production... Lissa, it's like a dream come true!”
"Time to wake up!" Lissa tried to get the cell phone from her friend's hand, but before the move was complete, Angela had already answered the call and turned on the voice.
“Melissa Bittencourt?” An unknown voice called after Angela's greeting. “It’s the production of Gabriel Voss.”
“Oh my God! Oh my gosh!” Angela began to repeat hysterically, making the person on the other end of the line laugh.
“I think you already have an idea about the reason for my call. In any case, I would like to warn you that you won the contest... A whole year following Gabriel.”
Angela let out another hysterical scream.
“I think you happy ... I'll let you celebrate. But I need you to separate your passport and documents to expedite the necessary visas. We will get back to you”.
“Thanks!” Angela said to the cell phone, but looked directly at Lissa. Her eyes was full of tears and she had a smile on her face. “This is amazing! I'm so happy... After this, I can die happy.”
"I didn’t say I'd take it." Melissa said as soon as the call was terminated, but her conviction of not attending the damn tour had faded when the happiness she had witnessed. It was rare to see Angela so excited.
