He believes he knows what needs to be done to reverse the trend, but can it be achieved in time, even with the resources at his disposal? Should he turn to terrorism to make it work? First Light: The Search for the Edge of the Universe

Seven years before Richard Preston wrote about horrifying viruses in The Hot Zone, he turned his attention to the cosmos. In First Light, he demonstrates his gift for creating an exciting and absorbing narrative around a complex scientific subject--in this case the efforts by astronomers at the Palomar Observatory in the San Gabriel Mountains of California to peer to the farthest edges of space through the Hale Telescope, attempting to solve the riddle of the creation of the universe. Richard Preston's name became a household word with The Hot Zone, which sold nearly 800,000 copies in hardcover, was on The New York Times's bestseller list for 42 weeks, and was the subject of countless magazine and newspaper articles. Preston has become a sought-after commentator on popular science subjects. For this hardcover reprint of what has been called "the best popular account of astronomy in action," (Kirkus Reviews) he has revised the text and written a new introduction.

This is a collection of short stories from my “Origins” series, all packaged into one giant short story with chapters (Making up less than 18,000 words in all). It was never intended to be within one book and there have been no alterations to ensure it fits correctly in such a format. Therefore, I implore you to read with due care.

My Brief History

**NATIONAL BESTSELLER Stephen Hawking has dazzled readers worldwide with a string of bestsellers exploring the mysteries of the universe. Now, for the first time, perhaps the most brilliant cosmologist of our age turns his gaze inward for a revealing look at his own life and intellectual evolution. My Brief History recounts Stephen Hawking’s improbable journey, from his postwar London boyhood to his years of international acclaim and celebrity. Lavishly illustrated with rarely seen photographs, this concise, witty, and candid account introduces readers to a Hawking rarely glimpsed in previous books: the inquisitive schoolboy whose classmates nicknamed him Einstein; the jokester who once placed a bet with a colleague over the existence of a particular black hole; and the young husband and father struggling to gain a foothold in the world of physics and cosmology. Writing with characteristic humility and humor, Hawking opens up about the challenges that confronted him following his diagnosis of ALS at age twenty-one. Tracing his development as a thinker, he explains how the prospect of an early death urged him onward through numerous intellectual breakthroughs, and talks about the genesis of his masterpiece A Brief History of Time—one of the iconic books of the twentieth century. Clear-eyed, intimate, and wise, My Brief History opens a window for the rest of us into Hawking’s personal cosmos.

At Ancient Thebes

An archaeologist working in modern Egypt, near Luxor, wonders if she is an incarnation from the time of the Pharaohs. Perhaps she had once been a stately Queen who died while in youthful beauty. On a solitary walk towards the Valley of The Tombs of The Queens she does bridge time – and she gains insight. The great span of Egyptian history stimulates a Canadian archaeologist working in the Theban hills near the modern city of Luxor. Her original interest in archaeology had come from romantic notions of getting closer to the people of the past – of bridging time by treading the same ground, by touching the same stones as those people. In the Canadian Plains of her childhood a building was considered ancient if it had been built last century, and such antiquity was not usually considered at all desirable. Perhaps she herself was a reincarnation from the time of the Pharaohs. Perhaps she had once been a stately Queen. One who had died while in youthful beauty and had been buried in the Royal Tombs nearby. On a solitary walk towards the Valley of The Tombs of The Queens she does bridge time – and she gains insight.

The Mirror of Yoga

The world of yoga is astonishingly rich in its array of schools and practices. Yet, as diverse as they seem, they share a common aim: the discovery of the essence of existence that can be found at the core of our being, and the liberation that comes from that discovery. With this worthy goal in mind, Richard Freeman presents an enlightening overview of the many teachings, practices, and scriptures that serve as the basis for all the schools of yoga—hatha, bhakti, jnana, karma, tantra, and others. He shows how the myriad forms are ultimately related, and can even be perceived to make up a vast, interpenetrating matrix, symbolizing the unity, profundity, and beauty of the ancient tradition.Richard's wide-ranging discussion includes the Upanisads and Samkhya philosophies...
