You may have heard of Johannes Cabal; he is a necromancer and a little infamous. He is also very sensitive to attempts on his life. When a murder of crows tries to... well, murder him, and the contents of his bath are transmuted into hot nitric acid, he suspects someone may mean him harm. The trail leads to one of the less travelled parts of Hell itself, and there Cabal will need a guide. As Dante had his Virgil, so Cabal employs the services of a devil who is a monster, a predator, and — most alien of all to Cabal — a woman. The devil Zarenyia and he delve deep into Hell, even into Satan's greatest mistake, to confront challenges quite outside the ken of any mortal. But one should always use a long spoon when supping with a devil, and Cabal soon realises the unthinkable, a horror beyond his experience. He is actually beginning to like her.At the publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management software (DRM)... Views: 61
Veteran British author Stableford's Emortality series of future history novels (Inherit the Earth, Architects of Emortality and Fountains of Youth, which start in the 22nd century and end in the 26th) receives a near-future underpinning in this mid-21st-century puzzle of maneuvers in the face of impending doom. Police forensic scientist Lisa Friemann wakes one night to armed intruders in her highly secure dwelling. Nothing in all the information storage media the thieves steal seems important, or even work related. Events are hardly clarified by the news that prominent geneticist Morgan Miller, her graduate supervisor and longtime colleague, is missing. Does someone think Miller made a discovery that, contrary to usual practice, he had shared with no one in his field? And why would anyone want to bomb Mouseworld, the half-million-strong genetic library of rodent strains? Lisa's cityplex police and university colleagues enter the story one by one, followed by a confusing (to all concerned) array of other agencies and factions. Could there be a secret that will avert or postpone the expected world catastrophe, or at least give some people advantages over others? Stableford's background in biological and social sciences makes for convincing behavior and dialogue among the scientists, while long practice in the novelist's trade ensures a smooth and involving read. This series should remain more visible in the U.S. than his large stable of unjustly neglected past work. Views: 61
Annie Dawson’s recurring nightmare haunts her, as does the mystery of the rag doll she finds in the attic of her home, Grey Gables. The little doll, accented with the childish embroidery of a small bird on its tiny apron becomes the focus of a mystery unraveling in the small coastal town of Stony Point, Maine. Annie is driven to understand her dreams, calling to her from the echoes of time. Who are the little girls braving a wild New England storm, challenging an age-old curse in a harrowing journey to Butler’s Lighthouse? How are they tied to Grey Gables, first her grandmother’s home and now her own? Annie’s heart tells her to return the little rag doll to its rightful owner, but to whom does it belong? And will the journey to solve the mystery of the rag doll in the attic also lead Annie to a final decision on whether or not she should remain in Stony Point? When Annie came to Stony Point, it was just to tidy up Grey Gables and the rest of her grandmother’s estate—and perhaps to recover from the death of her beloved husband, Wayne. Her family back in Texas wants her to return. But the tapestry of her life in New England has richly blessed her with memories of childhood summers spent in the fishing village. She has slowly stitched a new life, filled with new friends and exciting new experiences. Then ambling into the picture comes Jim Parker, the ruggedly handsome photographer who is researching New England lighthouse legends. Annie’s best friend, Alice MacFarlane, is drawn to Parker and his adventurous spirit. Even if Annie elects to stay in Stony Point, will Alice unexpectedly move on to another chapter in her life? Join Annie and Alice, along with the members of Stony Point’s Hook and Needle Club, as they meet the mystery head-on. They—and you—will be shocked to find the answers to the mystery of the rag doll in the attic, and the key to Annie’s nightmarish journeys up the gale-slicked road to Butler’s Lighthouse. Views: 61
