Truth

A soldier in foreign parts acquires a strange ability while fighting on the front line, allowing him to perceive hidden social truths as lurid creatures. These start to drive him mad, especially the hostile beast that is the social phenomena of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change. This Sci-Fi / Cli-Fi story featured on the most viewed Climate Change site on the planet, ‘Watts Up With That’.‘Truth’ is a Sci-Fi / Cli-Fi (climate fiction) novelette that featured on the most viewed Climate Change site on the planet, ‘Watts Up With That’, also the primary UK climate blog ‘Bishop Hill’, and the Cli-Fi review post at Judith Curry’s leading ‘Lukewarmer’ blog ‘Climate Etc.’ (Judith herself is Professor and Chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology). The latter review was shared with Michael Crichton’s ‘State of Fear’, Rex Fleming’s first novel ‘Exposure’, Ian McEwan’s ‘Solar’, Barbara Kingsolver’s ‘Fight Behaviour’ and Clive Cussler’s ‘Arctic Drift’, plus several other novels and one other novelette. Blending front-line soldiering, the relationship of a captain and his partner, environmental and climate material, the controversial tale of ‘Truth’ is above all a revelation on negative social memeplexes, primarily the memeplex that is the social phenomena behind CAGW (catastrophic anthropogenic global warming). This tale will be challenging for some, but whatever your position in the debate, it holds interest for all…

Dumb White Husband vs. The Grocery Store

John would rather sit and watch the game, but his wife needs some things at the store. Can he complete the list and get back in time to see the end of the game?John is a dumb white husband. That is to say that he loves and cares for his family, is successful in his career, popular around the neighborhood, can dress himself (often without injury) and is capable of reasonable thought. Demographically, however, he functions like a 4-year-old that can’t quite master the intricacies of the potty. It isn’t his fault. He studied hard and got a college degree. He works hard and earns a comfortable living. But, like all other dumb white husbands, he leads a dual life; competent member of society by day, helpless male by night, weekends and holidays. He has served for years as the nervous legal department-approved foil of commercials, TV and movies. And, for this service, we thank him. No one has ever cared to look inside the mind of the dumb white husband – probably for a fear of what we might find – but, if we took a minute to consider it, we may see that he’s not as dumb as we all think. But, he probably is.In this adventure, Dumb White Husband goes to the grocery store. Also available in the collected edition The Big Book of Dumb White Husband.

Kaddish for an Unborn Child

The first word in this mesmerizing novel by the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature is “No.” It is how the novel’s narrator, a middle-aged Hungarian-Jewish writer, answers an acquaintance who asks him if he has a child. It is the answer he gave his wife (now ex-wife) years earlier when she told him that she wanted one. The loss, longing and regret that haunt the years between those two “no”s give rise to one of the most eloquent meditations ever written on the Holocaust. As Kertesz’s narrator addresses the child he couldn’t bear to bring into the world he ushers readers into the labyrinth of his consciousness, dramatizing the paradoxes attendant on surviving the catastrophe of Auschwitz. Kaddish for the Unborn Child is a work of staggering power, lit by flashes of perverse wit and fueled by the energy of its wholly original voice. Translated by Tim Wilkinson From the Trade Paperback edition.
