The Cadaver of Gideon Wyck

When Alexander Laing first came upon the sinister tale of Gideon Wyck in 1934, his publisher felt obliged to address the following Note to the Reader: “This story was received from a reputable literary agent, who claims to be as ignorant as we are of the author’s identity…Customary royalties will be reserved for the author’s account, should he wish to reveal himself to the agent with satisfactory proofs of identity.” Now, many years later we repeat the same explanation, for in all the time since that first publication none has come forward to confess to the authorship of so harrowing and demonic a tale. Dick Saunders is the name the author gives himself for the purposes of telling the story. He is a medical student of Dr. Gideon Wyck. Saunders begins to see an explanation for Wyck’s eccentric behavior, but does not find it until after a more final discovery is made in the medical school vault. The cadaver of Gideon Wyck is there, as if awaiting the post-mortem scalpel. It is not in Wyck himself, however, but in his laboratory that his monstrous secret is found. A Maine campus offers a seminar in demonology in this classic horror tale.

Port Mortuary (2010) ks-18

Port Mortuary, the title of Patricia Cornwell's 18th Scarpetta novel, is literally a port for the dead. In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta's past merges with the high tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she enlisted in the Air Force to pay off her medical school debt and found herself ensnared in a gruesome case of what seemed to be vicious, racially motivated hate crimes against two Americans in South Africa. Now, more than twenty years and many career successes later, her secret military ties have drawn her to Dover Air Force Base, where she has been immersed in a training fellowship to master the art of CT-assisted virtual autopsy--a procedure the White House has mandated that she introduce in the private sector. As the chief of the new Cambridge Forensic Center in Massachusetts, a joint venture of the state and federal governments and MIT, Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could shut down her new facility and ruin her personally and professionally. A young man drops dead, apparently from a cardiac arrhythmia, eerily close to Scarpetta's new Cambridge home. But when his body is examined the next morning, there are stunning indications that he may have been alive when he was zipped inside a pouch and locked insider the Center's cooler. Various 3-D radiology scans reveal more shocking details about internal injuries unlike any Scarpetta has ever seen. These suggest the possibility of a conspiracy to cause mass casualties. She realizes that she is fighting a cunning and cruel enemy that is invisible as she races against time to discover who and why before more people die. In Port Mortuary, Patricia Cornwell brings Scarpetta together with Marino, Benton, and Lucy in an intimate way that is reminiscent of the early novels, and we welcome a voice we haven't heard in years. The point of view is Scarpetta's, and this is her story.

Rich Bitch: Everything's Going to the Dogs

Vince Grange is a tough-assed labor negotiator in New York who's famous for being tough but fair. His nickname is Bulldog. He enjoys his work, his easy bachelor existence and his lack of ties. When his rich great aunt Marjorie dies to everyone's surprise she wills her spoiled French toy poodle to Vince. To the dog she wills the bulk of her large fortune. All Vince has to do is keep Mimi happy and healthy and when the pooch dies of old age, Vince will get the cash. Vince is not thrilled with the arrangement. Neither is Mimi, the poodle who only understands French (or pretends to). How can he keep up his bulldog reputation if he's seen walking a powderpuff on legs with a real diamond collar and pink-painted toenails! He can't do it! When the most gorgeous woman he's ever seen corrects his French -- a woman who turns out to be a nanny, he decides that what Mimi needs is the world's most gorgeous nanny. Sophie Veneau is more than happy to take on the job of escorting Mimi to the salon and preparing gourmet meals for Mimi's finicky palate. She's less happy about the wild attraction she feels to Mimi's big, sexy owner. When she and the French poodle are nearly mugged in the park, a large homeless black dog, ferocious and determined, comes to their aid. And follows them home. Soon, to Vince's horror, his one man household has increased to four. And somebody's out to hurt Sophie. In this romantic comedy about a rich dog and a poor dog, a big American man and a petite Frenchwoman, nothing is quite what it seems. Family drama, mystery, comedy and some hot, sexy nights mean that life will never be the same for this collection of opposites.
