Murder in the Air

There's a big stink in Blacklin County, and everyone seems to think Sheriff Dan Rhodes should do something about it. The smell is coming from the giant chicken farm owned by Lester Hamilton. Rhodes sees this as a matter for the state's air-quality enforcement agency, not the county sheriff. That all changes, however, when Hamilton is found dead, floating in an old rock pit not far from the town of Clearview. Hamilton had probably been engaged in the act of noodling for catfish, which is not only highly dangerous but illegal in Texas.Rhodes suspects that Hamilton didn't die by accident, though. There are plenty of suspects, including an eccentric community college professor and one of his colleagues, who lives near the chicken farm and has to wear a respirator mask to ward off the smell. Also, someone known in the county as Robin Hood is going around shooting arrows into utility poles as a protest. When semi-nude protestors arrive at the chicken farm, things really...

The Unusual Suspects (The Sisters Grimm, Book 2)

From School Library JournalGrade 4-6–In this second book in the series, Sabrina and Daphne continue their family's fairy-tale detective work in the Hudson River town of Ferryport Landing. The village has more than its share of Everafters, a group of fairy-tale characters who escaped persecution in Europe by fleeing to America over 200 years ago. Here, the sisters start attending the local elementary school where the principal just happens to be the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Snow White is a most beloved teacher. Almost instantly, one of their teachers is found dead in his classroom, tied to the ceiling in a spider web. While investigating his murder, the girls uncover a devious plot and get closer to discovering the whereabouts of their missing parents. Free-spirited Daphne is a perfect foil for her older, grumpier sister, Sabrina, whose understandable anger over the loss of her parents is the main theme of this novel. There are as many references to frightening aspects of today's world as there are nods to folklore and sometimes both appear in the same sentence. While this mixing of sensibilities proves that fairy tales can be as dark as reality, it also occasionally trivializes truly upsetting modern problems such as nuclear weapons and child labor. The story is fast paced and the main characters are sympathetic and appealing. The abrupt ending will leave readers hungry for the next book in the series._–Kathleen Meulen, Blakely Elementary School, Bainbridge Island, WA_ Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. And sure enough, their new school is full of surprises. Daphne’s lucky enough to get Snow White for a teacher—she’s so good with little people—but poor Sabrina’s stuck in Mr. Grumpner’s class, where the students are either sleepy or psychotic and her teacher is teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Is this just typical sixth-grade suffering or is there something seriously wrong at the school? When Mr. Grumpner is found dangling from the classroom ceiling in a spider web, even sunny Daphne is convinced that Ferryport Landing Elementary has a monster problem. Can the Sisters Grimm solve the crime? The Sisters Grimm are a welcome addition to the ranks of literary girl sleuths, and their adventures are sure to enchant.
