Now, fifteen years after leaving school behind, they're back for a reunion, laughing, reminiscing, and chatting how much has changed—and how much hasn't. Outgoing and compassionate, Frankie works for a New York publishing house. Rachael, always the most boy-crazy of the crew, married—mostly to please her parents—but is now divorced. Solar Pons Versus the Devil's Claw

Hugh Mulvane comes to Pons and Parker at 7B Praed Street to tell them the truly lurid tale of the life and death of his creepy uncle, whom he is now accused of having murdered. Simon Hardcastle was a hermit who almost never left his home, Chalcroft Manor, and was resentful when his nephew Hugh left it as well. Nevertheless, one cold winter night the old man left the manor and was later found dead in the family mausoleum. It is subsequently discovered that though the body was fully clothed when found, the man had been stark naked when he was killed! Bizarre footprints left near the body resemble devil's feet, thus raising the specter of the Legend of the Devil's Claw.Pons interrogates the odd cast of characters: Peters, the estate manager and his drop-dead gorgeous wife, Sarita; Mulvane's girlfriend Sybil Masterson; Vincent Tidmarsh, the music master at a nearby college; and even the maid, Angela. The problem is that only Hugh Mulvane has any obvious motive for wanting the old man dead. Believing in the innocence of his client, Pons perseveres and eventually uncovers an astoundingly diabolical conspiracy.Out of Basil Copper's many stories continuing August Derleth's detective Solar Pons (himself a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes), he offers only this single novel. Solar Pons Versus the Devil's Claw is a grand story, harking back somewhat to The Hound of the Baskervilles, hinting as it does of death at the hands of supernatural agencies. Of course Pons sees through that blind so soon as Mr. Mulvane brings him the eerie news, embarking on yet another intensive criminal investigation at yet another English manor with his faithful assistant Dr. Parker. Be sure that they solve the mystery, weeding through the many suspects and the hat full of clues that seem to point in every direction. This book was published in a very small edition by a specialty press, is now out of print, and I gather that very few current owners are willing to part with their copies. I don't blame them. Therefore it sells for a small fortune in the collectors market.

Light of the World

Louisiana Sherriff's Detective Dave Robicheaux and his longtime friend and partner Clete Purcel are vacationing in Montana's spectacular Big Sky country when a series of suspicious events leads them to believe their lives--and the lives of their families--are in danger. In contrast to the tranquil beauty of Flathead Lake and the colorful summertime larch and fir unspooling across unblemished ranchland, a venomous presence lurks in the caves and hills, intent on destroying innocent lives. First, Alafair Robicheaux is nearly killed by an arrow while hiking alone on a trail. Then Clete's daughter, Gretchen Horowitz, whom readers met in Burke's previous bestseller Creole Belle, runs afoul of a local cop, with dire consequences. Next, Alafair thinks she sees a familiar face following her around town--but how could convicted sadist and serial killer Asa Surette be loose on the streets of Montana? Surrette committed a string of heinous murders while capital punishment was outlawed in his home state of Kansas. Years ago, Alafair, a lawyer and novelist, interviewed Surette in prison, aiming to prove him guilty of other crimes and eligible for the death penalty. Recently, a prison transport van carrying Surette crashed and he is believed dead, but Alafair isn't so sure. Says The Plain Dealer (Cleveland), "Already designated a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, Burke should get another title, say, for sustained literary brilliance in his Dave Robicheaux series." Light of the World is a harrowing novel that examines the nature of evil and pits Dave Robicheaux against the most diabolical villain he has ever faced.

Wolf Lake

Could a nightmare be used as a murder weapon? That's the provocative question confronting Gurney in the thrilling new installment in this series of international bestsellers. The former NYPD star homicide detective is called upon to solve a baffling puzzle: Four people who live in different parts of the country and who seem to have little in common, report having had the same dream--a terrifying nightmare involving a bloody dagger with a carved wolf's head on the handle. All four are subsequently found with their wrists cut -- apparent suicides -- and the weapon used in each case was a wolf's head dagger. Police zero in quickly on Richard Hammond, a controversial psychologist who conducts hypnotherapy sessions at a spooky old Adirondack inn called Wolf Lake Lodge. It seems that each of the victims had gone there to meet with Hammond shortly before turning up dead. Troubled by odd holes in the official approach to the case, Gurney begins his own investigation -- an action that puts him in the crosshairs of not only an icy murderer and the local police but the darkest corner of the federal government. As ruthless as the blizzard trapping him in the sinister eeriness of Wolf Lake, Gurney's enemies set out to keep him from the truth at any cost -- including an all-out assault on the sanity of his beloved wife Madeleine. With his emotional resources strained to the breaking point, Gurney must throw himself into a deadly battle of wits with the most frightening opponent he has ever faced. Wolf Lake is the page-turning new work by a writer hailed by the New York Times as "masterly" -- and it furthers the adventures of Dave Gurney, a detective reviewers have compared to Sherlock Holmes.
