Slaves of The Klau by Jack Vance is a short but very intense novel. A lowly, though rebellious human servant to an advanced alien is seized and taken into the most desperate slavery under utterly ruthless masters. His initial attempts at escape turn into an ongoing journey of personal development as his mental strength and power grow to enable him to take command of increasingly complex and hazardous situations. The story is completely believable and consistent, as the hero fights to overcome setback after setback. It is wonderfully woven between the different personalities of a number of alien races, a highly technological future, and intergalactic war. Very clever ideas, very visual, delightfully written. This is a timeless piece. It has been on my bookshelf for nearly thirty years and has been read many times. Views: 31
The first novella in the electrifying e-book-exclusive trilogy by R.J. Ellory, “the perfect author to read late into the night” (Clive Cussler)In Three Days in Chicagoland, his most ambitious effort yet, R.J. Ellory tackles the story of a brutal murder from three radically different perspectives. It’s 1956, and though Chicago’s gangland days are long over, it remains a city drenched in violence. Its latest victim is Carole Shaw, a young woman who had no enemies—except, that is, The Killer who strangled her to death and left her body on her kitchen’s cold, linoleum floor. The Sister is the story of Carole’s short life and tragic death—and of the dramatic trial that followed. Our narrator Maryanne Shaw, Carole’s grieving sister, counts down the seconds until the execution of Lewis Woodroffe, the man convicted of murdering Carole. Gripping all the way through its shocking final lines, The Sister is a bold and hard-boiled introduction to this remarkable mini-epic. Views: 31

The sixth volume in the Agatha, Anthony, Derringer, and Macavity award-winning "Chesapeake Crimes" series includes stories by: Barb Goffman, Rosemary and Larry Mild, E. B. Davis, Shaun Taylor Bevins, Cathy Wiley, Art Taylor, Shari Randall, Meg Opperman, Carla Coupe, Timothy Bentler-Jungr, Linda Lombardi, Debbi Mack, Clyde Linsley, and Donna Andrews."One thing I've learned during a long career as a writer is that a good short story is one of the hardest things to write. To capture mood, character, tension, and a satisfying climax in a few pages requires more skill than having the luxury of a novel to get things right. That's why I'm so impressed that the writers of Chesapeake Crimes seem to deliver quality work in anthology after anthology. This one is especially fun as the theme is holidays. And who hasn't wanted to commit a murder at a family holiday celebration?" —Rhys Bowen Views: 31
