  “Super,” I said.

  “She says she’s thinking about being my friend.”

  “Now you’re getting somewhere,” I said.

  “All you have to do is keep it up. You don’t need me anymore.”

  “You know Desiree was never my best friend,” Duncan said.

  “I know it.”

  “You are!” he said.

  “Not yet,” I said.

  I put down the receiver.

  I made some notes for my files.

  I closed my files and turned out the light in my office.

  I went into my other bedroom to be myself.

  Tomorrow I’m going to school.

  Sometimes I’m a regular kid.

  Sometimes I’m not.
