Red as a Rose is She: A Novel

Red as a Rose Is She, by Rhoda Broughton (1870). This commonplace love-story is very simply told. The scene is laid in Wales. The heroine, Esther Craven, promises to marry Robert Brandon, “to keep him quiet,” though caring much less for him than for her only brother. But on a visit she meets the heaven-appointed lover, and notwithstanding her engagement the two at once fall in love. Interested friends, who do not approve the affair, plot and bear false witness to break it off. Esther confesses to Brandon her change of feeling, and he is man enough to release her. Then ensues a period of loneliness, misunderstanding, and hardship for the heroine, whose character is ripened by adversity. When happiness once more stands waiting for her, she has learned how to use its gifts. The story moves quickly, and is entertaining.

Femme

Femme fatale. French for “deadly woman.”     You hear the term a lot these days, usually in connection with noir fiction and film noir. But they're not just products of literature or film, the folklore of nearly every culture. They exist in modern society, too. The gnuine femme fatales you har about now and then are every bit as evil as the fictional variety. Yet what sets them apart is that they're the failures, the ones who for one reason or another got caught. For every one of those, there must be several times as many who get away with their destructive crimes…     In the thirty years the Nameless Detective has been a private investigator, he has never once had the misfortune to cross paths with this type of seductress… but in Femme he'll meet Cory Beckett, a deadly woman who has brought some new angles to the species. The Outcry

To cover the gambling debts of his daughter Kitty Imber, the widowed Lord Theign is planning to sell his beautiful painting Duchess of Waterbridge by Sir Joshua Reynolds to American billionaire Breckenridge Bender. Hugh Crimble, a young art critic, argues against the sale, saying that Britain\'s art treasures should stay in the country. While the controversy in this novel might seem hopelessly remote and trivial, it\'s seemingly similar to the furor that erupted during the 1980s in the United States, when Japanese buyers were snapping up "trophy acquisitions" in America. American newspapers at the time created much the same stink as the British newspapers in James\' book.
