They say that opposites attract. But what happens when one has been devastated by betrayal and the other is so jaded that his heart is made of stone? A Child of the Jago

'The Jago had got him, and it held him fast.' In the worst of London's East End slums, in an area called the Jago, young Dicky Perrott is used to a life of poverty, crime, and violence. Gang warfare is the order of the day, deaths are commonplace, and thieving the only way to survive. At first Dicky dreams of becoming a High Mobsman - one of the aristocrats of Jago crime - but the efforts of Father Sturt to improve conditions offer him a different path. Dicky's journey takes him through a savage but colourful community of pickpocketsand cosh-carriers, where the police only enter in threes, and where murder erupts with an unusual horror and intimacy. Morrison's portrayal of the Victorian underclass and its underworld drew attention to the bleak prospects for children living in such surroundings, and it is a classic of slum-fiction. In this edition Peter Miles provides a rich contextual background to the creation of the novel, and the social debates to which it contributed. ABOUT...

It's the Clue characters like you've never seen them before!Just for fun... this short story based around the whodunit game Cluedo/Clue was written as a guest post for the blog 7criminalminds in January 2011 The prompt was: “The Clue characters are locked in a winter lodge. Mr. Boddy is found dead in a snowdrift with no visible signs of trauma. Who did it and how do you prove it using just the things in the lodge?”This is Mr. Boddy's faithful retainer, Blanche White's recollection of the events of the fatal night, as told to police detective Bruno Gray. I do not own the game Cluedo/Clue, and I am not in any way affiliated with Hasbro, the publisher of the game. I just borrowed the characters to have some fun.

Haiku Moments

For lovers of Haiku everywhere. Kristina Howells creates her first collection of 100 Haikus, all ranging from different themes.INTRODUCTIONLet me begin by telling you the story of my interaction with one of my cliens, well, patients, to illustrate the importance of this book. I was helping my patient who was in great physical and mental distress. She was so much in agony that she asked me to do anything and or give her anything to relieve her pain. This is because, before now she had been elsewhere without much help. She had tried many therapies without much success. Well, the story proceeded and she insisted on her demand. I told her that, “I can only give you what I have. What I have include what I know”. That is exactly where this book is heading. Writers write their books from experience and skilful abilities which may have been inherited: an experience that may flow from inspiration, instructions whatever their form, active lessons learnt in education, professional or personal tragedies and tri-umphs. My own understanding is not different. If anything, I have been through them all—bereavement and failings amongst others.I can only give you what I have, in poems and in other forms of words, from experience that I have acquired.Like my patients who ultimately found relief from my offering, I hope this book will serve as a great comfort to you, the readers. Now, the book is divided, broadly, into sections to make for easy search and access. Readers may discover that, life in general is a continuum. As such, while individual poems as sources of encouragement may be read individually, the poems as in, life may be read altogether. My target audience is just you who in times of need, you may requires simple words of encouragement to give you a boost. If my poems have resonated with you and help your personal situa-tion, then, I have achieved my aims.

The Terranauts

A powerful, affecting and hilarious deep-dive into human behavior in an intimate and epic story of science, society, sex, and survival, set in the early 1990s, from one of the greatest American novelists today. It is 1994, and in the desert near Tillman, Arizona, forty miles from Tucson, a grand experiment involving the future of humanity is underway. As climate change threatens the earth, eight scientists, four men and four women dubbed the “Terranauts,” have been selected to live under glass in E2, a prototype of a possible off-earth colony. Their sealed, three-acre compound comprises five biomes—rainforest, savanna, desert, ocean and marsh—and enough wildlife, water, and vegetation to sustain them. Closely monitored by an all-seeing Mission Control, this New Eden is the brainchild of eco-visionary Jeremiah Reed, aka G.C.—“God the Creator”—for whom the project is both an adventure in scientific discovery and a momentous publicity stunt. In addition to their roles as medics, farmers, biologists, and survivalists, his young, strapping Terranauts must impress watchful visitors and a skeptical media curious to see if E2’s environment will somehow be compromised, forcing the Ecosphere’s seal to be broken—and ending the mission in failure. As the Terranauts face increased scrutiny and a host of disasters, both natural and of their own making, their mantra: “Nothing in, nothing out,” becomes a dangerously ferocious rallying cry. Told through three distinct narrators—Dawn Chapman, the mission’s pretty young ecologist; Linda Ryu, her bitter, scheming best friend passed over for E2; and Ramsay Roothorp, E2’s sexually irrepressible Wildman—The Terranauts brings to life an electrifying, pressured world in which connected lives are uncontrollably pushed to the breaking point. With characteristic humor and acerbic wit, T. C. Boyle indelibly inhabits the perspectives of the various players in this survivalist game, probing their motivations and illuminating their integrity and fragility to illustrate the inherent fallibility of human nature itself.
