If you enjoy the old west with a twist, cowboy lawmen with guns blazing and outlaws, always on the take and of course dope, zombies and the strange flying machines of the elders….this one might be for you?Scratches starts as the Sacramento lawman—Dan Bardwell—falls from his saddle in front of the mission gates at Arroyo de la Cantua. After safely getting his man—or men rather—and riding away into the night, the lawman is awakened by a terrible buzzing which can’t be explained. With a blood moon rising across the range, he is confronted by the undead as he stands next to a little fire with a blued Navy Colt in each hand. The zombies continue to pile through the long nighttime hours until the bullets are no more. As he lies prostrate under an unforgiving desert sun, sand blows around his form and he has a series of delirious visions, where he meets Ahote—an old Indian friend—and Father John who may or may not really be there?Scratches is the first of a planned series of short stories written in support of the novel, Ain’t No Law in California—from Solstice Publishing, in which the Sacramento lawman, Dan Bardwell, rides through hell and high water on the trail of some outlaw or another. The short collects various bits from the rewrite of a follow-up novel which I hope to submit soon.If you enjoy the old west with a twist, cowboy lawmen with guns blazing and outlaws, always on the take and of course dope, zombies and the strange flying machines of the elders….this one might be for you? Previously published and new unpublished stories exploring aspects of human dying from the murdered to the beautiful. The stories cover tragedy, horror, humor and poetry. Some extracts: 'Art is not about harsh reality; it's about embellishment, hiding the truth. And eternity. Once painted a flower remains forever in bloom, a cornfield forever in sun. A woman's face forever beautiful.' 'He wasn't lying right. As he fell his right arm had twisted behind and caught underneath making him lop-sided. Sliding my surgical gloves on my hands I pulled his arms out so they spread in the usual position. Like Jesus on the cross the Standard had described a previous body, but it wasn't. These guys got nowhere near a cross. They were meat on the slab.''The boy stands and Jani's finger tightens on the trigger ready for the kill. But once upright he doesn't move, standing stock-still, arms by his sides. Jani once again trains the cross hairs on the face. The eyes are filled with defiance now, chin up. The boy slides his feet together then, slowly, lifts his arms out from his side, holds them wide and open, palms forward. A smile breaks on his face and he lifts closed eyes to the black sky. ''Daily I have visualized Cameron in front of me, tasted the saliva building in my mouth as my finger pulls the trigger. I watch him hit the ground, limbs splaying at odd angles, the plastic smile on his face, gone forever. They grab me, those around him, wrench the gun from my hand and wrestle me to the ground. I stay calm among the panic. My task done.''My name is Finn McIntyre. Finn, short for Finnegan. My eyes are different, the left one green, the right, a soft speckled brown, the color of walnut cake. From the age of twelve I read poetry and science journals and held a recorded IQ of 141 - the same as Benito Mussolini. Smart but weird, that's what kids at school used to say of me. Smart, but too goddamn weird. They only knew the half. ''When his world changed, Archie Middleman was sitting quietly on a garden bench thinking about petunias. The sun bathed his face, a breeze cooled his skin, a bird-feeder in the tree above swung gently under the force of a departing sparrow. A brief heaven for a weary gardener. As he looked up at the flight of the bird the summer sky exploded filling the air with bright vanilla light and a soft familiar two-word greeting fell like an axe through his skull.' Views: 606

A zealous government tries to use one lover against another for information. But when that fails, the government proves they still have the upper hand.Conan Burke’s childhood is curious. He is born in Bootle in 1920 to a couple who marry in haste. His Belgian mother suffers from long cyclical depressions and Conan spends half of his childhood in the care of his maternal grandmother in Brussels. He proves to be an unusual, single-minded child who is obsessed with language. He develops a special talent for recognising accents and learns to pinpoint a speaker's birthplace by the sound of their voice. When his mother dies prematurely, he finds himself free to roam the north of England on his bike, all the while honing his linguistic skills. He is earnest and undeviating in his obsession and there are hints of how his compulsive behaviour will make his grown-up life difficult, singular and sometimes absurd. Nowadays he might well be diagnosed as suffering from Asperger’s Syndrome. By the 1960s Conan has become a radio personality and university lecturer in Romance Linguistics attached to a Department of Spanish somewhere in the North of England. When his marriage fails because his wife can no longer stand his unreasonable and often ludicrous obsessive behaviour he decides he will try to change in order to win her back. He wishes he could become more romantic and imaginative instead of being so cold and factual. So, during the summer vacation he embarks upon a journey to Galicia in north-west Spain, hoping that a pilgrimage to this rural cradle of magical realism might wondrously transform his notoriously concrete thinking. The tale is narrated by his daughter Jennifer, who accompanies him on the journey. She grounds him, rescues him and protects him, jealously guarding him from the predatory attentions of an academic girlfriend who takes advantage of his lack of worldliness and attempts to rob him of his chance discovery of a literary and anthropological find.
