InkStains January

InkStains is a random collection of stories – fiction and nonfiction of any genre – handwritten daily over the course of a year and published one month at a time.InkStains is a random collection of stories – fiction and nonfiction of any genre – handwritten daily over the course of a year. When John Urbancik started this project, he aimed to write a story every day for a year. By hand. He found an inexpensive yet fancy fountain pen, started with a Moleskine notepad, and on 1 January 2013 set to writing. He took one mandatory day off monthly. Stories did not have to be fiction. Nonfiction, essays, reviews, memoirs – all genres – everything was open, so long as they were complete. These are the results: failures and successes both. Everything is included. He cleaned up grammar and spelling, and spent months typing up the almost 250,000 handwritten words; he did my best to strengthen the writing where it was weak. The author is very happy with a lot of the stories, and disappointed with others, but some are fantastic. (I’m biased. You decide.)

Originally published in Morpheus Tales magazine.Timothy didn’t know what it was, the thing at the end of Elbow Street. It was big – bigger than a house, he didn’t doubt, if it were to unfurl to its full height – and it was made of something beginning with ‘c’.He didn’t know what it was, the creature at the end of the street, but he suspected it was there because of him.

The Apocalypse Script

It is the conspiracy of all conspiracies. Humanity's ancient and hidden masters have tired of their slaves and have scripted the apocalypse. Financial markets crash, crops fail, wars rage, and disease spreads around the globe. Ben Mitchell, former Marine turned ancient languages expert, is the only man who can save humanity from extinction - but at what cost? What happens when humanity’s hidden masters tire of their slaves? They start over.Financial markets are crashing, crops are failing, Cage’s disease is a pandemic, and sabers are being rattled around the globe. It’s not the world that Ben Mitchell, an expert on ancient and esoteric writings, envisioned when he left the battlefields of Afghanistan a decade ago.The world looks a little brighter when he is offered a small fortune by the attractive but mysterious Lilian Stratton to research some puzzling inscriptions found on set of stone tablets discovered in Tiwanaku, Bolivia. But to do that he must join a secret society known as the Delphic Order of the Nisirtu and travel to Steepleguard, the remote fortress-like home of an elderly eccentric named Ridley. The researcher soon finds that his client has lured him into a conspiracy of epic proportions. The rumored New World Order is, in fact, very ancient. The world is truly a stage and the scripts that have preserved mankind for millennia are being systematically destroyed by the invisible kingdoms that authored them. Within days the final script will run its course and the planet’s scattered survivors will be thrust into a new Dark Age.Lilian’s powerful opponents are now Ben’s, and even his client’s supposed allies seem to have hidden and sinister agendas. The man finds himself in a shadowy world of insane kings, power-hungry dukes, psychopathic assassins, rebel knights, and an exiled princess who will stop at nothing to regain her world throne. As civilization rapidly disintegrates and clandestine armies converge on Steepleguard, humanity’s future hinges on the researcher’s ability to navigate the labyrinths of the Nisirtu and unlock the secrets of the Tiwanaku tablets.

Her Portrait in Black

The past should never be forgotten. A foreign student studying in Japan becomes obsessed with the subject of a seventeenth century painting, awakening a dark curse. As a synonym for diamond, “blue rock,” promises marriage and an engagement ring. The phrase also evokes music, spanning both the blues and hard-driving rock. “Blue rock” also holds an element of fire, as in anthracite, or “hard coal,” as well as a fiery pounding, as happens with a ritual hammer-stone. Like the process of forming diamonds itself, these 80 love poems compress passion and betrayal, with results resembling fossilized ferns in bedrock as well as the protracted metamorphosis into crystalline jewels or flames.

I, Spaceman

I love the old Sci Fi series and I thought, can I write Flash Fiction in the same vein? Well, judge for yourself. In these stories you’ll meet the crew of B-Mover 14, Newton 2, Old Space Dog and a host more as they travel the Graveyard Sector; as well as my alien species the Pridians, Angerians, Envins, Lustaceans, Gred and the Slothy. We’ll go boldly, and not split infinity.Jazz, Season One, Episode FourDJ, Jazz’s trusty sidekick, brought Jazz her favorite motorcycle and a bevy of weapons. Leaving Clowntown behind them, the Nittsburg boarder, meaning food, sleep, and relative safety, is minutes away and Jazz desperately needs to get back to her office and scrub the magical stone gurgling in her belly. If she doesn’t, then she’ll relive every injury the stone ever healed and no one had any idea how old the thing is. On her modified motorcycle and with a full tank of Jowndus juice the trip’s a piece of cake But it seems that Jazz had managed to rile up a squadron of Cranks and as fast as it is, her bike is no match for Crank flycraft, especially the Kriscrossa, the Crank’s elite fighter squadron. Seems like Jazz has two choices, run and get herself shot, or stand and fight and get herself shot.
