After years of taking Blaine for granted, he finally grasps how nothing—not even a promising career in politics—is worth it without her by his side. Desperately he searches for anyone who was with Blaine just prior to the blast. But instead, he finds something—someone—much more important. From Publishers WeeklyBeautiful Blaine Anderson, who lives in a posh Austin, Tex., townhouse with her lawyer husband, Mark, seems to have it all. In reality, she's a timid trophy wife who's secretly terrified by city traffic, threatened by change and especially frightened that her possible pregnancy might further alienate the career-driven Mark. To find out if she really is pregnant, Blaine visits a women's free clinic, but while she's there, the clinic is bombed in an apparent act of anti-abortion terrorism. Blaine soon realizes that the bombing was an unfathomable attempt by Mark's senior partner to kill her. Unable to contact her husband without endangering him, the injured and bewildered Blaine lives among the homeless, and in doing so confronts her fears as well as a relentless killer. Thomas (The Widows of Wichita County, etc.) skillfully, and at times humorously, depicts the various street characters who assist Blaine, and she does an excellent job of portraying Mark's moving metamorphosis—with the help of an irresistibly eccentric old lady neighbor—from cold careerist to caring human being. By the book's end, the author has believably revitalized the dead-end relationship of two emotionally numbed people. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. He was a drifter, through and through. Could he give up his wanderlust for a mail-order bride he didn’t know was coming?
Having grown up in the shadow of two beautiful sisters, ‘Scrawny Bonnie’ Blue knows she doesn’t stand a chance at landing a good man in Beckham, Massachusetts. The only way she’ll find a husband is by leaving her family behind to become a mail order bride. But when all three Blue sisters are swept up in a scandal, she has no choice to but to take ‘Gorgeous Gwen’ and ‘Lovely Libby’ with her…kicking and screaming, if she must.
Bart Dalton would be happy riding the range forever, but his brothers need his help to start a ranch in north Texas. He figures he’ll last a year or so before his feet get itchy again, which his brothers understand. As triplets, they can almost read each others’ minds. Except when his oldest brother orders three brides for them all. It would have been nice to have a little warning about that!
When Bart is late to meet the train carrying the Blue sisters, his brothers get first dibs, leaving Bonnie standing alone and dejected once again. It only gets worse when her ‘intended’ finally shows up and balks at the idea of marrying her. The only thing Bonnie has going for her are her wits, and she puts them to good use by proposing a business arrangement that Bart can’t refuse.
