The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey

Transcription of the handwritten pages: http://www.hmssurprise.org/Resources/... In response to the interest of millions of Patrick O'Brian fans, here is the final, partial installment of the Aubrey/Maturin series. Blue at the Mizzen (novel #20) ended with Jack Aubrey getting the news, in Chile, of his elevation to flag rank: Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, with orders to sail to the South Africa station. The next novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of the author's death, would have been the chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. The three chapters left on O'Brian's desk at the time of his death are presented here both in printed version-including his corrections to the typescript-and a facsimile of his manuscript, which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript to include a duel between Stephen Maturin and an impertinent officer who is courting his fiancée. Of course we would rather have had the whole story; instead we have this proof that O'Brian's powers of observation, his humor, and his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end.

Diaries of Franz Kafka

It is likely that these journals will be regarded as one of Kafka's] major literary works; his life and personality were perfectly suited to the diary form, and in these pages he reveals what he customarily hidfrom the world." -- New Yorker "What seems to hold the diaries] together is a kind of ruthless honesty and self-awareness." -- New York Times Though Franz Kafka is one of the greatest and most widely read and discussed authors of the twentieth century, and continues to be a tremendous influence on artists of our time, he remains an elusive figure, his life and work open toendless interpretation. These diaries reveal the essential Kafka behind the enigmatic artist. Covering the period from 1910 to 1923, the year before Kafka's death at the age of forty, they provide apenetrating look into Kafka's world -- notes on life in Prague, accounts of his dreams, his feelings for the father he worshipped and for the woman he could not bring himself to marry, his sense of guilt and of being anoutcast, and his struggles and triumphs in expressing himself as a writer. Now, for the first time in this country, the complete diaries of Franz Kafka are available in one volume. They are not onlyindispensable to an understanding of Kafka the man and the artist, but are a compulsively readable, haunting account of a life of almost unbearable intensity. The Move

What he hadn't reckoned with was having to use four vehicles that were mostly illegal or unroadworthy and the removal driver had a broken leg.The convoy broke up on the M5 when most of them were arrested. Hilarious but true.THE MOVE is a true story of a family in crisis and how they coped or often didn’t cope. Art Blakely’s small plumbing business had been made bankrupt and there was a repossession order on his house. After hiring a huge removal lorry Art and his family packed up their home and fled Crawley and the bailiffs hoping for a dream life in glorious Devon. Hoping their creditors wouldn’t find them they rented a bleak cottage on the edge of Dartmoor. It wasn’t long before Art lost his job when the Victorian attitude of the employers finally got to him. Nine months on, now penniless, cold, starving and jobless their dream new life had become a living nightmare. Their only option was to move house again. This time they were moving to London. With no money for moving costs, Art put together a team of willing if inept, house movers. A friend, who owned a removal lorry, the only expert on the team, turned up with his broken leg in a plaster cast. It was a set back but it wasn’t going to change Art’s plan to lead a convoy of four clapped out or illegal vehicles up the M5. Before long they became separated as one by one they got pulled over by the police. Now Art Blakely’s entourage including two dogs and a couple of guinea pigs were spread out over four counties. Filled with extraordinary incidents and ridiculous people, THE MOVE will move you to tears and have you laughing out loud.
