"Auto-da-Fé" is the story of Peter Kien, a distinguished, reclusive sinologist living in Germany between the wars. With masterly precision, Canetti reveals Kien's character, displaying the flawed personal relationships which ultimately lead to his destruction.
Manipulated by his illiterate and grasping housekeeper, Therese, who has tricked him into marriage, and Benedikt Pfaff, a brutish concierge, Kien is forced out of his apartment - which houses his great library and one true passion - and into the underworld of the city. In this purgatory he is guided by a chess-playing dwarf of evil propensities, until he is eventually restored to his home. But on his return he is visited by his brother, an eminent psychiatrist who, by an error of diagnosis, precipitates the final crisis...
"Auto-da-Fé" was first published in Germany in 1935 as "Die Blendung" ("The Blinding" or "Bedazzlement") and later in Britain in 1947, where the publisher noted Canetti as a 'writer of strongly individual genius, which may prove influential', an observation borne out when the author was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981. "Auto-da-Fé" still towers as one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, and Canetti's incisive vision of an insular man battling agianst the outside world is as fresh and rewarding today as when first it appeared in print. Jean Rhys may be best known as the author of Wide Sargasso Sea and other novels. But she was as accomplished a short story writer as a novelist. The Collected Short Stories brings all of Jean Rhy's stories together in one volume.
Informed by the places she lived and the people she knew, these stories, set in London, Paris, and the Caribbean, hold and haunt the reader because they call up emotions, places, atmosphere, even physical sensations, with a powerful freshness. They are, as Ford Madox Ford writes, "extraordinarily distinguished by the rendering of passion." Views: 716

*Author's Note: This novella is no longer available. I combined all of the Dumont Diaries novellas into a standalone novel, which was rewritten, expanded, and retitled as Trophy Wife. *
When Nathan Dumont, heir to Dumont Shipping, steps onto the scene with a new wife, the media sits up and takes notice. But nothing can be found on the new Mrs.Dumont. No family history, private school chums, or expensively hidden skeletons in couture closets. It is as if she has materialized out of thin air, and wearing Chanel.
Life in a fairytale sucks. Even if it does come complete with eight inches of wontleavemealone steel. But when that glorious package is attached to a man that won’t give me a second glance, much less a piece of his heart, what good is a wedding ring and boatloads of cash?
To make matters worse, I am slowly stumbling along and finding red flags. Flags that make me think there is more to this fairytale than meets the eye. In fact, I’m not so sure it’s a fairytale at all. It looks to be much, much worse.
To Hold is a novella, approximately 60 pages, and was book 2 of a 4-part series. Views: 715

These nine powerful stories focus on the lives of adult men; some from the present, others from the recent past. Though many could be considered tragedies, there are also moments of justice, courage and humour. Both sexes will appreciate the experiences of these intriguing characters, however; whose collective message is that confronting our weaknesses can often become our greatest strength.Nine Lives is a collection of short stories written over the past decade. The opening story, ‘Not Found Hanging’ concerns a comfortably married man discovering that his ex-lover is terminally ill, and how his repressed guilt over how he deceived her threatens to destroy him too. In ‘Suddenly Autumn’ it is the protagonist who faces serious illness, but his reaction to it is both extreme and surprising. The central character of ‘Chameleon in a Coalmine’ is Hans Asperger, and spotlights his relationship to the activities of medical experimenters under the Nazis. ‘On the Level’ is a short thriller set at a level crossing, where a philanderer’s guilt forces him to make a split second decision about his lover’s husband, with catastrophic results. In ‘If Bricks Should Burn’ a former World War Two airman is haunted by nightmares of his time spent in a Lancaster bomber, whilst struggling to cope with an incurably ill wife in the present. ‘No Laughing Matter’ is a fictional account of the life of one of Britain’s best loved entertainers (but can you guess who?). ‘Imagine Me’ focuses on the relationship between a transvestite and his widowed father, and the novel solution they find to cope with their shared grief. ‘Discharge of Duty’ is the story of a conscientious objector and the privations he suffers as a result of his moral stand - a story with a distinctly black style of humour! Finally, in ‘Strangers at the Door’ an elderly man, who feels persecuted by his neighbours, repeatedly misinterprets the motives of professionals sent to help him, who ironically have his best interests at heart.
