SEX, DRUGS, AND MURDER INTHE LAND OF THE LOTUS EATERSAnita Carbone was a good girl-and it bored her. "A masterful and compulsively readable book that challenges our preconceived notions about a behavior often sensationalized in our culture and, until just recently, misunderstood in the scientific world." —Ian Tattersall, Curator Emeritus, American Museum of Natural History, and author of The Strange Case of the Rickety Cossack For centuries scientists have written off cannibalism as a bizarre phenomenon with little biological significance. Its presence in nature was dismissed as a desperate response to starvation or other life-threatening circumstances, and few spent time studying it. A taboo subject in our culture, the behavior was portrayed mostly through horror movies or tabloids sensationalizing the crimes of real-life flesh-eaters. But the true nature of cannibalism—the role it plays in evolution as well as human history—is even more intriguing (and more normal) than the misconceptions we've come to accept as fact. In... Long ago, before the myth of Merlin the Magician took root in the annals of time, a sacred amulet named after King Aurelius Ambrosius was said to bridge the mystical chasm between mankind and a race of gods and goddesses residing in the very heart of Britain.... According to legend, the Ambrosius Amulet lays hidden amid the ruins of a predecessor to the inner circle of Stonehenge, known as Bluehenge. Located a mile south of its more famous brother, the remains of Bluehenge sit near the winding course of the River Avon. As luck would have it, a map leading to this sacred amulet has fallen into the hands of Nick Caine. Belonging to Nick's lovely cohort, Marie Da Vinci, her deceased father entrusted the map to her shortly before he died. His final wish was to lay claim to the priceless relic he spent much of his life looking for. His dream--and now Marie's quest--is for her to locate and procure it for a prestigious museum in Los Angeles. But there is a problem. Nick and Ishi want to forego the expedition and leave Europe for the United States. Yassir Ali has issued a death warrant for all three, after they decided not to share the gold recovered from Sekhmet's tomb in Egypt. After being chased across Europe by hired assassins, Nick feels they have already outlasted their welcome, and the reprieve they've gained in England will only last so long. In the end, the lure of finding this rare amulet--one long believed to be merely mythical--proves impossible to resist. As Yassir Ali's men close in for the kill, Nick, Marie, and Ishi soon learn whether tempting fate to pursue a cursed item is worth it. Or, should they have left the Ambrosius Amulet alone?** Views: 56

After three decades of prodigious film work (and some unfortunate tabloid adventures as well), it's easy to forget that Woody Allen began his career as one heck of a great comedy writer. Getting Even, a collection of his late '60s magazine pieces, offers a look into Allen's bag of shtick, back when it was new. From the supposed memoirs of Hitler's barber: "Then, in January of 1945, a plot by several generals to shave Hitler's moustache in his sleep failed when von Stauffenberg, in the darkness of Hitler's bedroom, shaved off one of the Führer's eyebrows instead…" Even though the idea of writing jokes about old Adolf-or addled rabbis, or Maatjes herring-isn't nearly as fresh as it used to be, Getting Even still delivers plenty of laughs. At his best, Woody can achieve a level of transcendent craziness that no other writer can match. If you're looking for a book to dip into at random, or a gift for someone who's seen Sleeper 13 times, Getting Even is a dead lock. Views: 56
