Spite

“Roll out that chicken wire, Frank.” Science would never have thought of the chicken wire.John Beach's sixth collection of poetry. The 35 terzanelle poems in this collection are about memory, what information we choose to store about the present (soon to become the past), and how we alter it each time that we think about it in the present. We do this consciously and subconsciously. It helps us to learn and to make better choices… or we can get completely lost in it.The terzanelle is a French/Italian adaptation of the terza rima to the villanelle form. Each terzanelle is meant to be 19 lines long (ten syllables each), composed of five triplets with a concluding quatrain, and are written in iambic pentamater. I don't pay much attention to where my metrical feet are stepping, but I enjoy the puzzle-like nature of this form and the subtlety of the repeating lines, the variations in meaning. I also enjoy breaking the lines and changing punctuation.

Forever Mine

This is a debut short story. What happens when new, intense love mixes with jealousy and insecurity? Michelle has met the man of her dreams and wants him all to herself. Will she get what she wants and will it give her the happiness she craves?War is hell, according to William Tecumseh Sherman. That was then. Now, war is a game played by established rules, by mutual agreement, by gentlemen, and only when all other means of problem resolution have failed. Suffering, real human misery, can be reduced or even eliminated when war is kept within boundaries. War is now a much more attractive prospect, in this satire. It even makes an odd kind of economic sense, as production equates with prosperity. War is disruptive to the natural environment, and that’s always a concern too. All we are saying, is give war a chance. A short story.

Illusionarium

What if the world holds more dangers—and more wonders—than we have ever known? And what if there is more than one world? From Heather Dixon, author of the acclaimed Entwined, comes a brilliantly conceived adventure that sweeps us from the inner workings of our souls to the far reaches of our imaginations. Jonathan is perfectly ordinary. But then—as every good adventure begins—the king swoops into port, and Jonathan and his father are enlisted to find the cure to a deadly plague. Jonathan discovers that he's a prodigy at working with a new chemical called fantillium, which creates shared hallucinations—or illusions. And just like that, Jonathan is knocked off his path. Through richly developed parallel worlds, vivid action, a healthy dose of humor, and gorgeous writing, Heather Dixon spins a story that calls to mind The Night Circus and Pixar movies, but is wholly its own.

Shriek: An Afterword

An epic yet personal look at several decades of life, love, and death in the imaginary city of Ambergris--previously chronicled in Jeff VanderMeer's acclaimed City of Saints & Madmen--Shriek: An Afterword relates the scandalous, heartbreaking, and horrifying secret history of two squabbling siblings and their confidantes, protectors, and enemies. Narrated with flamboyant intensity and under increasingly urgent conditions by ex-society figure Janice Shriek, this afterword presents a vivid gallery of characters and events, emphasizing the adventures of Janice's brother Duncan, a historian obsessed with a doomed love affair and a secret that may kill or transform him; a war between rival publishing houses that will change Ambergris forever; and the gray caps, a marginalized people armed with advanced fungal technologies who have been waiting underground for their chance to mold the future of the city. Part academic treatise, part tell-all biography, after this introduction to the Family Shriek, you'll never look at history in quite the same way again.
