The Problem Child (The Sisters Grimm, Book 3)

From School Library JournalGrade 4-6–Sabrina Grimm, 11, and her 7-year-old sister, Daphne, are still on the trail of The Scarlet Hand, which has kidnapped their parents. On the way to rescuing them, the sisters meet their likable Uncle Jake, whom they had never heard of before. Granny Relda had arranged for everyone in town to forget him after he inadvertently broke the spell that kept a deranged Little Red Riding Hood in the asylum. The book is loaded with cameos by fairy-tale characters, including Prince Charming as playboy turned sleazy politician. Although they will delight fairy-tale fans, some of the most interesting figures get short shrift. Puck, who combines magic with mischief in a way that both attracts and repels Sabrina, disappears from the action early on. Granny Relda's gentleman friend and every tale's wicked wolf is resurrected only at the end of the novel. Still, there is plenty of plucky Sabrina, nurturing Granny Relda, and Daphne. The end leaves plenty for the next book to resolve. Each chapter starts with a menacing silhouette, and black-and-white full-page illustrations add more macabre details. Recommend this to anyone who is craving a bit of dark humor rolled up with whimsy and adventure._–Tina Zubak, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA_ Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Product DescriptionA third installment in this much-talked-about new series of mysteries set in a modern-day fairy-tale community The sisters Grimm, intrepid detectives of fairy-tale crime, come face to face with their parents' kidnappers, the mysterious organization of Everafters who call themselves The Scarlet Hand. One of them turns out to be the world's most famous fairy-tale character and the other an unstoppable killing-machine known as the Jabberwocky. Without Mr. Canis (aka The Big Bad Wolf) fighting at their side, the girls have little hope that they'll be reunited with their mother and father. That is until their long-lost Uncle Jake returns home with stories of a weapon, now destroyed, that can kill the Jabberwocky. The girls must find the pieces so the deadly blade can be reforged, and in the process butt heads with some of the most powerful Everafters in Ferryport Landing. Will the sisters Grimm save the day? "Adventure, laughs, and surprises kept me eagerly turning the pages." --R.L Stine, author of the Goosebump series

The 20th Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK ™: Evelyn E. Smith

During the 1950s, Evelyn E. Smith regularly published science fiction in magazines like Galaxy and Fantastic Universe. These range from post-apocalyptic satires, such as "The Last of the Spode" and "The Hardest Bargain," to "BAXBR/DAXBR," where she explores the dangers of Martian crossword puzzles. She also wrote four science fiction novels, which chiefly deal with questions of gender identity. Like all of her work, they are characterized by their wit and humor. At her best, she was the equal of anyone -- male or female -- writing for the pulp magazines. This volume collects 12 of her short stories.

Shadower

Science Fiction Romance from RITA nominated author! Injured in a bar fight and then stranded on a hellhole planet when her ship is stolen, smuggler Moriah Cameron finds herself at the mercy of arrogant Sabin Travers. She manages to elude him, but quickly realizes she has no good option to get off Calt, so she stows away on Sabin’s ship. Sabin discovers her just as she stumbles upon a secret that could affect hundreds of lives—a hidden Shielder colony. Forced to take Moriah captive to protect that secret, he decides to take her to Elysia to have her memory altered. Instead of being grateful that he didn’t shut her up permanently, Moriah is infuriated about being delayed from picking up a crucial shipment. In return, Sabin resents the disruption this defiant and ungrateful woman creates in his life. Having a strong aversion to domineering men like Sabin, Moriah manages to steal his ship and escape—after dumping him, drugged and naked, at a Pleasure Dome. Her freedom is short lived when Sabin catches up with her. He finds a way to make her pay, and she has no choice but to go along. As they battle wills and wits across the quadrant, Moriah is shocked by her growing attraction to Sabin. But when she discovers he is also a shadower, all bets are off. She eludes him once more and heads to a dangerous but lucrative delivery. Things go wrong at the drop, and only Sabin’s major sacrifice can save her. But ultimately, it’s love, acceptance, and healing that save them both. From the AuthorNumerous readers have asked about a follow-up to my debut book, Shielder, and I was thrilled by so much interest. I'm delighted to be able to honor those requests. Shadower is actually the prequel to Shielder, however each book stands alone, and can be read in any order. When Sabin and Moriah appeared as secondary characters in Shielder, they sparked the moment they met. I knew I was going to have to give them their own story. Shadower is an exciting and sensual galactic adventure, with these two at odds from the very beginning. When bounty hunter Sabin Travers comes to Moriah Cameron's rescue in a bar fight on a hellhole planet, he has no idea she's a smuggler dealing in illegal goods. All he knows is that she turns his universe upside down, drugs him, and steals his ship. Yet, despite her treachery, all he can think about is her seductive wiles. Moriah never suspects the handsome stranger is the one thing she hates most: a shadower. But she recognizes! the threat Sabin poses to her, with his charming wit and dark good looks. The attraction she feels for him is far more terrifying than being arrested and imprisoned. For she hides a secret far darker than her unlawful activities . . . . I hope you'll come along on the adventure. You can re-visit some of the familiar characters from Shielder, and meet new ones. Book three of the series, Shamara, will be available in fall 2001.

As a Sentinel, a guardian sent to help protect King City, he couldn't let that happen, even if it meant breaking the rules... Madison Rychel had never really fit in. With no friends, swimming in a pile of debt, and only her father as company, every day hopelessness crept closer and closer. That all changed when the masked man showed up at her door, telling her she had to leave right then and there if she wanted to live.
