Everything you want to know about haiku written by one of the foremost experts in the field and the "finest translator of contemporary Japanese poetry into American English" (Gary Snyder)Who doesn't love haiku? It is not only America's most popular cultural import from Japan but also our most popular poetic form: instantly recognizable, more mobile than a sonnet, loved for its simplicity and compression, as well as its ease of composition. Haiku is an ancient literary form seemingly made for the Twittersphere—Jack Kerouac and Langston Hughes wrote them, Ezra Pound and the Imagists were inspired by them, Hallmark's made millions off them, first-grade students across the country still learn to write them. But what really is a haiku? Where does the form originate? Who were the original Japanese poets who wrote them? And how has their work been translated into English over the years? The haiku form comes down to us today as a cliché: a three-line... Views: 548

From the Editor:
"J.D. Lasica transports the reader into a fascinating and terrifying future--one whose potential foundation is already being laid today. Filled with gripping twists and turns, 'Biohack' is an electrifying answer to the question of what would happen if the win-at-any-cost mindset prevalent in Silicon Valley was carried over to the world of genetic engineering. Readers of futuristic fiction and technological thrillers are sure to love it."

From the Author
3 questions for the author of *Biohack*
Biohack has been described as a technothriller and a near-future science thriller, but it also has elements of a crime thriller, science fiction, conspiracy thriller, medical thriller, and even legal thriller. Was that intentional?
Yeah, it definitely blurs genre boundaries. I set out to play in the fertile terrain pioneered by the late, great Michael Crichton while going for a sprawling international vibe a la Tom Clancy. But my focus was on the characters.
I also didn't want to draw from the usual cast of thriller characters--no FBI agents, hard-boiled detectives, or rogue CIA operatives. Instead, you'll find a diverse set of underrepresented voices, a kick-ass protagonist, and a theme of women reasserting their power.
There are a lot of jaw-dropping scenes and I was wondering at times, Can this really happen?
I think the most powerful stories are built on a foundation of truth. So I spent months of research to get the science and details right. Most people don't know about the enormous implications of the reproductive technologies coming just around the bend. The future is hurtling toward us, and we're not ready for it.
Who's the audience for Biohack?
Early readers say it's a good fit for fans of Michael Crichton, Dan Brown, Clive Cussler, Tim Tigner, and A.G. Riddle--that's flattering. My job is to get out of the way and not let fussy writing get in the way of a rollicking good story. Views: 548
