Damned Whores and God's Police

Sexual harassment, domestic violence and date rape had not been named, although they certainly existed, when Damned Whores and God's Police was first published in 1975. That was before the Sex Discrimination Act of 1984 and before large numbers of women became visible in employment, in politics and elsewhere across society. It's hard to imagine an Australia where these abuses were not yet fully understood as obstacles to women's equality, yet that was Australia in 1975.It was in this climate that Anne Summers identified 'damned whores' and 'God's police', the stereotypes that characterised all women as being either virtuous mothers whose function was to civilise society or bad girls who refused, or were unable, to conform to that norm and who were thus spurned and rejected by mainstream Australia. These stereotypes persist to this day, argues Anne Summers in this updated version of her classic book which, in the 40 years since it was first published, has sold well over 100,000...

Apprehensions & Convictions

What makes a fifty-year-old man quit a highly successful career in charity work to take on the low-paid, dangerous job of being a police officer? When Mark Johnson left the United Way to become the oldest rookie in the Mobile, Alabama, police department, he didn't just have to adjust to a new career—he had to adjust to an entirely new life of danger, violence, and stark moral choices. Barrier Islands

At age twenty-two, Brooke Fulcher Howard has landed in the island paradise of her earliest dreams. But when this paradise proves to be less than she had hoped or expected, she must explore both the island around her and the one within her heart to discover a future for herself and her infant daughter.Every month for over 20 years, scores of youth from West African Countries are wasted in a bid to find a better life in the Southern European Countries while transiting illegally through Libya. Anthony is a clear example of one whose experience was phenomenal. According to him, the price of leaving Nigeria - his country of origin, may be death or the hell of detention but that’s not important. What is important is leaving, and travelling far from the stripes of abject poverty and political instability.I wish to tell his story in this book, tragic yet adventurous. If I do it well - and I will do my best - I believe I will unequivocally describe the predicaments suffered by illegal aliens and unlawful asylum seekers in Libya and other countries. I wish to clearly lay my claims against the pointless exodus embarked by our maladjusted youth, and to recommend urgent panaceas to the inflicting problems of youth migration.
