The Disappearance of Mr James Phillimore

When popular mystery writer Sebastian McCabe agreed to take part in a literary debate in London, he had no clue that he would wind up as both investigator and suspect in the strangest case of his amateur sleuthing career. Arthur James Phillimore, investment guru to the stars and member of an elite Sherlock Holmes society, steps back into his home to fetch an umbrella one rainy day and is never seen alive again. The mystery is eerily evocative of one of Dr. Watson’s most famous untold tales, the disappearance of Mr. James Phillimore. But this Phillimore soon reappears – dead. Jeff Cody and Lynda Teal, also in London on the second leg of their honeymoon, get swept up in the bizarre case as well. From the home gym of a gorgeous movie star (the second Mrs. Phillimore) to the flying office an airline entrepreneur, they help McCabe chase down clues all over London. For the journalist Lynda, it’s a big story. For Jeff, it’s a big distraction from the joys of married life. Dogging them...

Immigrant

A Memoir Across the AtlanticI was born in 1932 in Yorkshire to parents who had survived World War I and had seen England change from an agricultural to an industrial country. A visiting American engineer changed our lives when he asked my mother to leave my father and accompany him to Spain, which she did, taking me with her. When World War II changed Europe forever, my English mother, my sister, and I fled to America, leaving my stepfather behind to work for the OSS and to begin an affair with a Spanish spy whom he later married. The war over, my mother, sister, and I returned first to Europe then back to America, where my mother struggled to put a life together for herself and her two daughters.

Childish Things

Satirical and yet compassionate, Childish Things begins with a funeral at which Gregor McLeod, a retired school-master aged 72, is mourning the death of his wife Kate. It soon becomes evident, however, that McLeod has been something of a womaniser and, despite his very recent (and heartfelt) bereavement, is being pursued by an assortment of attractive women. Jenkins proceeds to explore McLeod's adventurous escapades with these ladies both at home and abroad. The result is a tremendously compelling comic novel which retains all the sharpness, wit and pace that is customary from Jenkins, combined with a mellow, wry wisdom that never fails to entertain. His central theme, do we ever outgrow 'childish things'?, is explored with captivating insight and delicious humour. This is a gloriously readable novel from a consummate storyteller.

Have Gown, Will Wed

Back in college, the bras-before-bros sisterhood decided to live for achievement in the boardroom, not the bedroom. Rosalind Betters embraced that philosophy, pursuing her career and little else. But when her last single friend, Kamakshi, announces her engagement in of all things, an arranged marriage, Rosalind reevaluates the merits of matrimony. In her typical gung ho fashion, she names a date, books a venue, hires a caterer, and picks out a dress, all before finding a groom. Taking a lesson from Kamakshi and too busy to do otherwise, Rosalind hires San Francisco's best headhunter, Xavier Hommes, to find her better half for her.

At first, Xavier thinks Rosalind is one of those eccentric personalities for which the city is famous. As he comes to know her, however, Xavier finds himself hating his task for reasons he never would have suspected. If Rosalind really wants a man who will make her happy, she need look no further. As W-Day approaches and Rosalind starts falling for someone Xavier himself headhunted, he walks the line between professionalism and passion, trying to decide if competing to become Mr. Betters is worth the risk to his commission, his reputation, and Rosalind's happiness.
