The Heartbreaking Half-Life of Harper Marwick

(This is a short story of approximately 12 pages.)The Medical Society requests the pleasure of your company as it presents the journals of the esteemed vampire and physician, Dr. Dunham. These brief entries chronicle his theories and observations of his immortal progeny, Miss Harper Marwick, and her descent into despair.A retired MLB pitcher finds love and redemption via a hurled can of humble soup. Refusing to obey signals cost him his career, once--but this time--a beanball is exactly what's called for, and the signs all make sense. Making a hero often requires a "zero" to balance the equation. Seeing life from both sides of the fence, the protagonist reconciles his past, finds humility, and creates a new beginning. This story isn't about about baseball, though it makes significant commentary on contemporary status, thereof, and incisively nails what's wrong with the sport...where greed has driven it awry. This narrative is primarily about what's truly important in life--what's solidly pure and what's vacuously hollow--what's important when looming largely in front of us, but insignificant in the rear-view mirror with distance applied. Dreams and aspirations loudly drive us when young, while wisdom softly chuckles from the quiet perch of maturity. Each has its time and purpose.

Walk the Pit Road

Set in a Scottish mining village in the early nineteen fifties where life was still much as it had been before the war. Where the miner's woman folk still used the back green wash houses and everyone knew their neighbours. Where life was often hard but friends plentiful, there came a day when things changed and the village was never quite the same again.'Lunch on Lowestoft Pier' is another of Ken's delightful collection of short stories. This time they are predominantly based in his home country England plus a few more from the Gold Coast just for variety. These stories, as always, are short and punchy, just the right length to read in your lunch break. In his fifth volume of short stories, Ken has something to offer everyone. New characters include nurses at work, secret service agents, school boys getting up to mischief and so on. Ken's ability to draw the reader into every day lives of regular people is most unique. You too can be immediately transported to a time and era that possibly no longer exists, so you can either reminisce, or choose your own adventure - in any event, your reading needs are more than catered for, with this smorgasbord of saga's. Whatever your choice, you will not be disappointed as the unexpected unfolds with every word, slowly revealing the conclusion like a mini Agatha Christie mystery.
