Another Sun

French judge Anne Marie Laveaud has to rethink her murder investigation techniques when she is assigned to the tiny French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. On a plantation in the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, a man's body is found in a pond, riddled with bullets. The victim is Monsieur Calais, a wealthy land-owner. Within twenty-four hours, a suspect is arrested. He had been making death threats against Calais, claiming that land had been stolen from him, and the gun used to shoot Calais was found buried on his property. This, coupled with the fact that the man had just returned from a forty-year exile in French Guyana for murdering his wife, is enough to convince the gendarmes of his guilt. Anne Marie Laveaud, a French-born judge who has recently been transferred to Guadeloupe, is called in to make a ruling. With a keen sense of compassion for the accused, she must navigate the world of Caribbean justice--very different from what she was used to in...

The Whispering Muse: A Novel

Already celebrated far beyond his native Iceland, the novels of Sjón arrive on waves of praise from writers, critics, and readers worldwide. Sjón has won countless international awards and earned ringing comparisons to Borges, Calvino, and Iceland’s other literary superstar, the Nobel Prize winner Halldór Laxness. The Whispering Muse is his masterpiece so far.     The year is 1949 and Valdimar Haraldsson, an eccentric Icelander with elevated ideas about the influence of fish consumption on Nordic civilization, has had the extraordinary good fortune to be invited to join a Danish merchant ship on its way to the Black Sea. Among the crew is the mythical hero Caeneus, disguised as the second mate. Every evening after dinner he entrances his fellow travelers with the tale of how he sailed with the fabled vessel the Argo on its quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece.     What unfolds is a slender but masterful, brilliant, and always entertaining novel that ranges deftly from the comic to the mythic as it weaves together tales of antiquity with the modern world in a voice so singular as to seem possessed.Amazon.com ReviewAn Amazon Best Book of the Month, May 2013: Fish, myth, and pith form the foundation of this quick, quirky tale from celebrated Icelandic author Sjón. It's 1949 and a merchant ship embarks upon its maiden voyage. At the captain's dinner table, competing tale-tellers vie for the attention of their fellow travelers. The first is our tedious narrator, a retired journal editor who takes great pride in his theories and lectures on the connections between a fish-based diet and Nordic strength. But his oratorical skills (not to mention his subject of choice) pale in comparison to those of the ship's first mate, who in mysterious first-person detail shares the enthralling exploits of Jason and the Argonauts. Sjón artfully weaves the two together to comprise his own compellingly spun story; one that is over far too soon. --Robin RothmanReview“The Whispering Muse is a quirky, melodic, ticklish, seamlessly translated, lovingly polished gem of a novel.” —David Mitchell“An extraordinary, powerful fable—a marvel.” —Alberto Manguel“Sjón is the trickster that makes the world, and he is achingly brilliant.” —Junot Díaz“When I need something epic and lyrical I call upon Sjón.” —Björk“Sjón’s writing [is] full of brilliant details, surprises and delights . . . [He is] an extraordinary and original writer.” —A. S. Byatt, The Guardian

Solar Storms

June 30, 2014 Solar Storms is a prequel short story to the terrifying sci-fi thriller, Orbs, now offered by Simon and Schuster (Simon451). This story has been remastered and contains four chapters of exclusive material and one chapter from Orbs. _ In 2055, scientists discover something far worse than rising temperatures and rising seas--they discover massive sunspots that are producing unprecedented solar flares. With little time to prepare for the storms, NASA recruits Drs. Sophie Winston and Emanuel Rodriguez to help monitor the solar weather. At first, the duo believes they have been hired for a routine project. But when arriving at the Johnson Space Center they quickly realize they haven't been told everything about their mission. And as a massive storm races toward Earth, they begin to suspect that it isn't a natural event. Millions of miles away something is feeding the storms...Review**5 "A great introduction to the BIG adventure!...Stir together the best ingredients from Jurassic Park, Aliens, and Starship Troopers, and you've discovered *Orbs. -Arthur Bradley, Ph.D., Amazon Vine Voice/NASA Scientist 5 "Chilling prequel to Orbs*...Earth changes forever." -Cherly Stout, Amazon Vine Voice* *From the AuthorAfter writing ORBS I had several beta readers ask me about the solar storms mentioned in chapter six. They wanted to know more about what created them and how they destroyed and poisoned much of the planet. Thus the idea for Solar Storms was born. The prequel takes place five years before the events of ORBS. Diving right into the discovery of the solar storms, this short story describes how the coronal mass ejection wreaked havoc on the planet. In addition, it gives the reader a better idea of where these storms really originated. Were they really just a cosmic event or was something sinister behind them? I feel it is also necessary to explain something so customers are fully aware of what they are downloading/buying. As a couple readers point out, there is one chapter in Solar Storms that comes from ORBS. The other four chapters in Solar Storms were written with the intent of filling in some gaps that provide the reader with more knowledge going into ORBS. And while it isn't absolutely necessary to read this prequel before ORBS, Solar Storms is meant to be an introduction to the larger adventure. Thank you for reading. - NSS

In the Still of the Night

A collection of eight suspenseful tales from one of the century's finest crime authorsWith stories published when the author was in her seventies and eighties, this collection proves that after five decades writing crime fiction, Dorothy Salisbury Davis has lost none of her edge. In other stories, a woman picks up the wrong hitchhiker, an ex-detective decides to make some money by getting rid of his wife—forever—and a man gets involved in a road accident from which he simply cannot drive away.
