Who were the first humans to inhabit North America? According to the now familiar story, mammal hunters entered the continent some 12,000 years ago via a land bridge that spanned the Bering Sea. The presence of these early New World people was established by distinctive stone tools belonging to the Clovis culture. But are the Clovis tools Asian in origin? Drawing from original archaeological analysis, paleoclimatic research, and genetic studies, noted archaeologists Dennis J. Stanford and Bruce A. Bradley challenge the old narrative and, in the process, counter traditional—and often subjective—approaches to archaeological testing for historical relatedness. The authors apply rigorous scholarship to a hypothesis that places the technological antecedents of Clovis in Europe and posits that the first Americans crossed the Atlantic by boat and arrived earlier than previously thought. Supplying archaeological and oceanographic evidence to support this assertion, the book... Views: 68
Waylaid is the story of a Chinese American boy who struggles to grow up in the grip of an overcharged sexual environment. With a daily routine that involves renting out rooms to johns and hookers at his parents' sleazy hotel, the narrator loses his grip on concepts of friendship, family and childhood. As he pursues his all-consuming quest to lose his virginity, issues of race, class and sex cripple his sense of self-worth. It is a story told with a Gen-X-style bleak humor that doesn't pander to conventional notions of immigrant narrative. Waylaid doesn't cut a wide swath through Asian American literature. It is a switchblade in the gut to stories of over-achievement and success in America that ignore the human cost. This is the eBook edition of Waylaid, originally published in print form in May 2002. Review5 StarsI fell in love with this story and its characters. Dave being such a devoted husband and father, and Summer such a strong woman who spreads herself way too thin...like a lot of mom's. I enjoyed the times that Dave took control to allow her to just be in the moment. The moral of the story is very profound though...we, as people spend too much time looking to the future that we miss the best things right under our noses. I was sad to see their story end, but loved it completely. Kudos to Ann for another lovely story.- Michelle RomaFan Reviews*5 StarsSummer's Need is one of the most heart-touching stories I have read. I laughed, I cried, and I felt very connected to Summer about how she let her job get in the way of the love she and her husband share. I really felt her pain and love jump across the pages.- Tina *TwoLipsReviews Views: 68
