Gang of One: One Man's Incredible Battle to Find His Missing

Shortlisted for the Political Book Awards 2013 International Affairs Book of the Year. GANG OF ONE is the remarkable true story of one man's journey from a Glasgow orphanage to a notorious gang-infested prison in Texas. Driven by his desire to return to his son in England and haunted by the increasingly frustrating search for his missing daughter, Gary Mulgrew attempts the impossible task of surviving the prison's gang culture. Told with wit and humanity, GANG OF ONE shows a man constantly confronted by the moral and physical challenges of prison life, where everyone is encouraged to turn their back and 'see nuthin". Gary's choice - to walk away and let a man die, or intervene and lose the chance to get home - makes GANG OF ONE a book as unforgettable as it is enthralling.Review'A compelling new account of two blood-splattered years spent at the hands of America's penal system'. -- Mail On Sunday 'An entertaining read'. -- Guardian 'An eye-opening account of US jails...fascinating reading'. -- Libby Purves, Midweek, BBC Radio 4 'Utterly engaging'. -- Richard Bacon, BBC Radio 5 Live 'An absolutely fascinating story... an absolutely cracking read'. -- Iain Dale, LBC Book Club 'Confirms my worst fears about American jails...the real tragedy of this book was the human tragedy'. -- Jeff Randall, Sky News 'Mulgrew's combination of personal insight and dark, subversive humour makes his new, autobiographical account of jail, GANG OF ONE a really special read, a kind of prison version of, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' -- Catherine Deveny, Herald Magazine 'An absolute education...a fantastic book'. -- Pat Kenny, RTE 'Anyone who still believes that we should be sending people to American-style jails should read the description of the violent Texas prison in Gary Mulgrew's GANG OF ONE'. -- New Statesman About the AuthorGary Mulgrew was born in Glasgow in 1962 and lived there until he graduated from the University of Strathclyde. He joined NatWest Bank in 1983 and worked for them in Manchester, London, Tokyo and New York before joining the Royal Bank of Canada in 2000. His banking career ended in June 2002 when he was indicted by the US authorities for allegedly defrauding NatWest. After years of court battles and a high profile public campaign, he and two other members of the 'NatWest Three' were eventually extradited to America. Two years of detention in Houston, Texas were followed by two years in seven different prisons in the United States and England until his full release in early 2010. He now runs a number of successful businesses in the south of England, supported by his bankers, NatWest.

Then, she has a frightening experience of her own... When Lawson does deep and meaningful, you do understand! Jean Hendy-Harris (author) A story so good I didn't want it to end, so I read it twice. Diana Devine This could be one of the best books I've ever read; don't change a thing. George Flutey **Review Review:   It's nice to read works that embrace our own country. Forgiven also gives an interesting insight  into the Boer War and is an intrical part of a fascinating love story. It is an easy and very enjoyable read. I read it over a weekend and enjoyed it immensly. Warrick Review: The grief caused by war is well etched-out in this book. The old woman who had lost her only son made me teary-eyed - yet she could not blame the English for they had lost sons of their own. Anyone who wants to read a serious, thought-provoking novel should offer "Forgiven" a chance...Maria Lion Review:   Forgiven is a well written and edited story. It is well constructed and interesting; the time frame and location fascinating... Books go Social, Dublin Ireland. Review:  I've read Forgiven and thoroughly enjoyed the story. It had a bit of everything to appeal to a wide audience... history, romance, local knowledge. Well done Geoff Lawson.  From the Author Forgiven is a novel that is an outgrowth of a previous work; a history of the Anglo Boer War. As a historian myself, it is my view that no matter what the age a historical novel is set in, it should preserve the historical setting accurately. Our ancestors were not like us because their world view was dependent on the social and political forces of their time, which was very different to that of today. Therefore, I feel that the accurate portrayal of their attitudes and sensibilities is essential when writing modern, historical fiction.

Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death

It is 1953, the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II . Sidney Chambers, vicar of Grantchester and honorary canon of Ely Cathedral, is a thirty-two-year-old bachelor. Tall, with dark brown hair, eyes the color of hazelnuts, and a reassuringly gentle manner, Sidney is an unconventional clerical detective. He can go where the police cannot.Together with his roguish friend, inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney inquires into the suspect suicide of a Cambridge solicitor, a scandalous jewelry theft at a New Year’s Eve dinner party, the unexplained death of a jazz promoter’s daughter, and a shocking art forgery that puts a close friend in danger. Sidney discovers that being a detective, like being a clergyman, means that you are never off duty, but he nonetheless manages to find time for a keen interest in cricket, warm beer, and hot jazz—as well as a curious fondness for a German widow three years his junior. With a whiff of Agatha Christie and a touch of G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown, The Grantchester Mysteries introduces a wonderful new hero into the world of detective fiction.ReviewWhile the diminutive priest detective created by G. K.
