The Mysterious Force

J.-H. Rosny Aîné is the second most important figure in modern French science fiction after Jules Verne. Rosny, who was a member of the distinguished Goncourt literary academy, was also the first writer to straddle the line between mainstream literature and science fiction. Until now, Rosny has best been known to the English-speaking public for his prehistoric thriller, Quest for Fire. In The Cataclysm, the physical laws of nature change in an entire region of France because of the arrival of a strange electro-magnetic entity from outer space. The Mysterious Force is about the destruction of a portion of the light spectrum by aliens who, for a brief while, share our physical existence. In Hareton Ironcastle, explorers discover a mysterious alien world, fauna and flora, embedded in the Heart of Africa.

Timeslip Troopers

In Timeslip Troopers (1923), a squadron of World War I soldiers from the Trenches is transported back to the Spanish town of Valencia in the 14th century where they ally themselves with the Moors to fight the Spanish Inquisition. While it is one of several French novels inspired by H. G. Wells' The Time Machine -- purporting, in fact, to be its sequel -- it has more in common with Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in the Court of King Arthur, in that its timeslipped protagonists set out to use the advantages of modern civilization, but eventually cannot prevail against Dark Age obduracy. Written by the author of The Xenobiotic Invasion and The Martian Epic, Timeslip Troopers is one of the finest romans scientifiques of the period between World War I and the birth of American science fiction. It holds up remarkably well as an exploratory endeavor, and the quality of its cynical black humor is still as fresh as ever.

Spy Story

Computer games run in a classified war studies centre in London. Nuclear submarines prowl beneath Arctic ice. And war games go into real time. But in Armstrong’s violent, complex world, war-games are all too often played for real. Soon the chase (or is it escape?) is on. From the secretive computerized college of war studies in London via a bleak, sinister Scottish redoubt to the Arctic ice cap where nuclear submarines prowl ominously beneath frozen wastes, a lethal web of violence and double-cross is woven. And Europe’s whole future hangs by a deadly thread… Spy Story is the most authentic and brilliant novel of espionage yet from the world’s greatest writer of spy thrillers. This new reissue includes a foreword from the cover designer, Oscar-winning filmmaker Arnold Schwartzman, and a brand new introduction by Len...
