When Water Burns

"Maybe you're not meant to manipulate fire the way I do. Maybe sparks are all you're ever going to make."He snarled, "Or maybe you just need to be a better teacher and give me more." Before I could reply, he grabbed my hand, twisted and pulled me into a restraining lock. Body pressed against my back, he held me in a chokehold. I struggled. Kicked. Fought. Pain knifed me as I tried to free myself. He spoke and his breath was hot in my ear. "Now, fire goddess let's see if I can make more than sparks." Rising panic choked me, with it came rage. Most science fiction novels are plot driven. While the Parallel Conspiracy’s plot is very intense and a seat-of-your-pants adventure, it’s really the characters that grip you the most as they work their way through the mystery they have to solve. Although there is lots of friction and a romantic triangle develops between the main characters, they ultimately grow as individuals and as a group from the experience. It's also a unique blend of mystery, adventure and romance all rolled into a high tech science fiction novel. I think this combination also sets it apart from other scifi thrillers you'll readQ: Speaking of characters, you have some very strong female lead characters in the book. Did you find that aspect a challenge to write. A: While I suppose it’s easier for a man to write male characters and the opposite goes for women authors, I didn’t really focus on gender differences that much. I did of course have some. You have too. What I concentrated on more though was the unique emotional state of each character; how they would grow through the intense, life and death experiences they continue to be pushed into throughout the novel. Q: You used humor throughout the book. Can you explain its role in the novel?A: The novel is by no means a comedy, but I did slip funny things in from time to time. My main male character is a computer programmer who is stepped on continuously by his wife, boss and co-workers. To get somewhat of a feeling of this ridicule, earlier scenes with him are written in a more humorous manner. As the story progresses and the character changes, my treatment of him does too. He is no longer to be laughed at but respected instead. There is of course a risk that the reader will think it’s not an intense action thriller when they start reading the novel, but it was a deliberate tactic that I used. Hopefully it works

The Uncommon Appeal of Clouds

ISABEL DALHOUSIE - Book 9 Nothing captures the charm of Edinburgh like the bestselling Isabel Dalhousie series of novels featuring the insatiably curious philosopher and woman detective.  Whether investigating a case or a problem of philosophy, the indefatigable Isabel Dalhousie, one of fiction’s most richly developed amateur detectives, is always ready to pursue the answers to all of life’s questions, large and small. In this latest installment of Alexander McCall Smith’s endearing Isabel Dalhousie series, the Edinburgh philosopher and amateur sleuth answers an unexpected appeal from a wealthy Scottish collector who has been robbed of a valuable painting. One afternoon over coffee at Cat’s delicatessen, a friend of Isabel’s shares a call for help from Duncan Munrowe. Crafty thieves have stolen a prized painting from his collection, a work by the celebrated French artist Nicolas Poussin that was earmarked for donation to the Scottish National Gallery. Munrowe has been approached by the thieves and hopes that Isabel will assist him in recovering the painting. Never one to refuse an appeal, she agrees, and discovers that the thieves may be closer to the owner than he ever would have expected. Against the backdrop of this intriguing case, Isabel copes with life’s issues, large and small. She and Jamie have begun to suspect that their three-year-old son, Charlie, might be a budding mathematical genius. What should be done about it? Then there is the question of whether Isabel should help a young couple who want to move in together—against the wishes of the girl’s parents. The boyfriend is hoping Isabel might intercede. As she wrestles with these problems, Isabel finds herself tested as a parent, a philosopher and a friend. But, as always, she manages to use the right combination of good sense, quick wits and a kind heart to come to the right solution, proving once again why Isabel Dalhousie has become one of Alexander McCall Smith’s most beloved characters.
