The Ash Tree

The first story in the Broken Shores series. After years of preparation and maneuvering, Dekkan gets the council to build the Beacon, which will change every aspect of life on the Island. But can Dekkan live with the accomplishment of his long-awaited goal? The world was once a place of plenty and wonders: famine and disease were largely unheard of, cities floated through the sky, everything appeared to be perfect. But it could not last. When the magic called Ve collapsed, society collapsed along with it: millions starved and the floating cities crashed to the ground. In the wreckage the byproducts of Ve use, magical beings called Amekt, went feral. This along with the ensuing wars rendered the mainland uninhabitable. In the last days of the old empire, as things began to fall apart, a small group split off an island-sized piece of rock and seeded it with a plant that would allow it to float. For nearly 500 years, the island of Ansau has drifted in isolation on the ocean currents. Life is more difficult than it was, but the Island’s inhabitants have learned to use the trickle of Ve and stability has been the rule. But things are about to change again. The Ash Tree is the first story in the Broken Shores series, in which events are set in motion that will change life on the Island forever. Beyond that, it is about the cost of those changes to those who bring them about.

I, Spaceman

I love the old Sci Fi series and I thought, can I write Flash Fiction in the same vein? Well, judge for yourself. In these stories you’ll meet the crew of B-Mover 14, Newton 2, Old Space Dog and a host more as they travel the Graveyard Sector; as well as my alien species the Pridians, Angerians, Envins, Lustaceans, Gred and the Slothy. We’ll go boldly, and not split infinity.Jazz, Season One, Episode FourDJ, Jazz’s trusty sidekick, brought Jazz her favorite motorcycle and a bevy of weapons. Leaving Clowntown behind them, the Nittsburg boarder, meaning food, sleep, and relative safety, is minutes away and Jazz desperately needs to get back to her office and scrub the magical stone gurgling in her belly. If she doesn’t, then she’ll relive every injury the stone ever healed and no one had any idea how old the thing is. On her modified motorcycle and with a full tank of Jowndus juice the trip’s a piece of cake But it seems that Jazz had managed to rile up a squadron of Cranks and as fast as it is, her bike is no match for Crank flycraft, especially the Kriscrossa, the Crank’s elite fighter squadron. Seems like Jazz has two choices, run and get herself shot, or stand and fight and get herself shot.

Jack Jarrod

Stephanie Stevens has writer's block. Jack Jarrod wants to help. A funny little short story for those of us who want to be romance novel writers.Ever since the day his twin brother Alex was swept out to sea as a child, Daniel George has been on a downward spiral. He can’t make friends, he can’t hold down a relationship and he can’t begin to grieve.Life is turned on its head when on the twenty-fourth anniversary of the tragedy, while visiting his local church, Daniel discovers an unconscious man slumped against his mother’s gravestone. A young nurse, Gulnaz Rahmani, herself paying her respects to a deceased relative, finds evidence of head injuries that indicate a mugging. Before the paramedics can carry him away, Daniel takes another look at the man, and through the cuts and bruises and the drawn, white skin he suddenly recognises the face of his long lost twin. For weeks, Alex languishes comatose in hospital, only to wake finally, mute and paralysed. Notwithstanding, if Gulnaz will agree to help him, Daniel will undertake to bring the prodigal, miracle-twin home and nurse him back to health. But is this man truly Daniel's twin brother? Wouldn’t a twin have tried to make contact years sooner? And why does he now so flatly refuse to play ball? As the invalid’s behaviour becomes increasingly threatening, and as the escalating pressures on Daniel sabotage his fragile new relationship with Gulnaz, so the tiny, cramped flat becomes a powder keg that sooner or later must explode. When the final spark comes, the consequences for everyone are catastrophic and profound.

Remember

What if you could erase a single, traumatic memory by simply popping a specially-formulated pill and sleeping it off? What if that memory turned out to be the crucial piece of evidence that could exonerate a wrongly-convicted man? Janet Stevens must now stay awake through one thrill-ride of a night in a desperate chase to find the real killer before her memory of the event is gone forever...Inspector Gilles Maintenon has finally run up against an original mind—someone who’s very good at wasting his time. A young bank employee is found dead in a vault that shows every sign of having been robbed. The premier Paris branch of Crédit Lyonnais holds ten or twenty million francs on a busy day. Then there’s the safety-deposit boxes. A proper investigation takes time. The police are nothing if not predictable in their procedures. But that other mind has already gone down that road. They’ve had plenty of time to think it through. Their killer, using simple human psychology, has come up with a brilliant plan. Gilles would dearly love to meet the mind that conceived of that plan. He intends to do just that. Mystery fans are sure to enjoy How to Rob a Bank, the sixth volume in Louis Shalako’s Inspector Gilles Maintenon Mystery Series.
