In today's society it is generally the written word that holds the authority. We are more likely to trust the words found in a history textbook over the version of history retold by a friend – after all, human memory is unreliable, and how can you be sure your friend hasn't embellished the facts? But before humans were writing down their knowledge, they were telling it to each other in the form of stories. The Edge of Memory celebrates the predecessor of written information – the spoken word, tales from our ancestors that have been passed down, transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next. Among the most extensive and best-analysed of these stories are from native Australian cultures. These stories conveyed both practical information and recorded history, describing a lost landscape, often featuring tales of flooding and submergence. These folk traditions are increasingly supported by hard science. Geologists are starting to corroborate... Views: 24

A Fast Food Nation for the airline industry, Attention All Passengers is a shocking and important exposé revealing the real state of the "friendly skies" in which we fly. Award-winning Consumer Reports travel journalist William McGee, a former editor of the Consumer Reports Travel Letter, spent nearly seven years in airline flight operations management, and what he learned was less than uplifting. From TSA power grabs and an endemic lack of oversight to legislative battles and lobbying boondoggles to antiquated flight patterns and outsourced maintenance workers, the airlines and the Government are in cahoots, conspiring to turn a profit any way they can, no matter who has to pay the price. A provocative and hard-hitting call to action, Attention All Passengers will explode all our previous misconceptions about the airline industry. Views: 24
The original 1985 edition of Children of the Poor Clares was the first book to expose the reality of the treatment of children placed in church care in Ireland's post-independence horrendous industrial school system. Giving an intimate picture, covering over four decades, of life in one of these institutions, it documented the gross physical and emotional abuse, neglect, malnourishment, exploitation, lack of proper education, deprivation, and humiliation that scarred the children for life. It further identified the collusion of the state and its own lawbreaking that enabled the abuse in its vast apparatus of incarceration of impoverished children. This revised updated edition gives chilling details of revelations that have since become public and of the state's ultimate responsibility for what took place. Views: 24
"The thing with avenging someone is that the victims who deserve it the most are always the ones who'd want it the least."

Adam Webb wasn't the first person to vanish in this stretch of the Green Mountains, and he won't be the last. Ghost towns, drug trafficking, blood and violence, all secrets buried beneath the stark, clean white of the January snows.
With everything Alex holds dear either taken from him or quickly slipping through his grasp, keeping his sanity - and his life - will mean getting to the root of the evil in the frozen state. If he still wants either of those things, that is...
THE TOUCH OF GHOSTS: WRITER'S CUT is a heavily-rewritten and re-edited version of a book first published by Penguin in 2003. While both this and the original form of the story are mysteries, the redrafting process for the original turned the story largely into a conventional whodunnit - a form it was thoroughly ill-suited to - whereas at the time of first writing, the idea behind it was to create a crime thriller exploring the different ways people deal with loss and tragedy, where solving the crime took second place to coming through events with your humanity intact, and without grief and anger turning you into the very thing that had hurt you in the first place.
This novel is the first in the newly-reworked Alex Rourke series of stories. Views: 24
