Some Day the Sun Will Shine and Have Not Will Be No More

"Some day the sun will shine and have not will be no more." These are the immortal words of Brian Peckford, who served as the third premier of Newfoundland, and leader of the Progressive Conservative Party from 1979 until his retirement in 1989. As one of Newfoundland's most committed and combative leaders, Mr. Peckford's clashes with the federal government—to wrest control of the province's natural resources—resulted in the groundbreaking Atlantic Accord of 1985, his greatest political triumph during the province's struggle for self-reliance in a post-Confederation era. This memoir begins with Mr. Peckford's formative years growing up in outport Newfoundland. It gives all due praise to personal heroes of his, from the seasoned fishermen of La Poile and Pilley's Island to experienced politicos such as Minister William Marshall and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The past, present, and his vision for the future of Newfoundland and Labrador are revealed here, as well as his...

Force of Nature

A psychopath is loose in Brooklyn, and it will take a half-mad cop to catch him. A gang of small-time dealers camps out underneath the Manhattan side of the Williamsburg Bridge, slipping hits to passing addicts in exchange for ten bucks a pop. It's blistering hot, and they drink beer to stay cool, sharing a six-pack with a couple of local girls. As the night winds down, a massive black man appears in a coat that's too heavy for the weather, produces a shotgun, and starts to fire. Among the dead are two supposed customers—an undercover cop and a reporter whom the city will avenge by opening a new front in the war on drugs. The gunman, a full-time crack addict with a boxer's build and a bulldog's temper, disappears into the wilds of Brooklyn. To roust him, Stanley Moodrow will rain hell on the borough, breaking in a new partner as he attempts to smoke out the wild man with a shotgun.

There will be many adults sneakily borrowing this from their children The Bookseller Auslander is a superlative, at times almost agonisingly compelling, piece of historical fiction ... The climactic escape to freedom is pure muck-sweat tension Financial Times Doswell is one of the best new writers of historical fiction for children ... [Auslander] steps outside the victim culture of novels such as those by Morris Gleitzman and comes close to classics such as The Silver Sword. Admirers of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas should look at this novel as a model of imaginative sympathy The Times About the AuthorA former senior editor with Usborne Publishing, Paul Dowswell is now a full-time author.
