"For everyone who loves Nantucket Island this is the indispensable book." —Russell BakerNantucket is a tiny island with a huge history. In his first book of history, Away Off Shore, New York Times-bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals the people and the stories behind what was once the whaling capital of the world. Beyond its charm, quaint local traditions, and whaling yarns, Philbrick explores the origins of Nantucket in this comprehensive history. From the English settlers who thought they were purchasing a "Native American ghost town" but actually found a fully realized society, through the rise and fall of the then thriving whaling industry, the story of Nantucket is a truly unique chapter of American history. In this spellbinding new history, David Goldfield offers the first major new interpretation of the Civil War era since James M. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom Where past scholars have limned the war as a triumph of freedom, Goldfield sees it as America's greatest failure: the result of a breakdown caused by the infusion of evangelical religion into the public sphere. As the Second GreatAwakening surged through America, political questions became matters of good and evil to be fought to the death. The price of that failure was horrific, but the carnage accomplished what statesmen could not: It made the United States one nation and eliminated slavery as a divisive force in the Union. The victorious North became synonymous with America as a land of innovation and industrialization, whose teeming cities offered squalor and opportunity in equal measure. Religion was supplanted by science and a gospel of progress, and the South was left behind. Goldfield's panoramic narrative,... Views: 64

Marie Harbon has done a remarkable job with this story. Set in a period where science is beginning to unfold, Seven Point Eight does test the well known question “does God exist?” It starts with a college professer teaching one of his lectures. When a young student possing information not everyone heard of comes in, he is taken by her. Then later, the main character undertakes an opportunity of his lifetime presented by another character named Max. Max sat in one of Paul's lectures with a question about the human soul. He is an interesting one with determination. All of the characters were well developed. If you're someone in the science field, you will love this. It not only travels through the years of science, but also the rest of the world's events. A blend of the two brings this among the others of its genre. The worlds are indeed ones full of life and imagination. Its rich ending will leave the reader in awe.' Views: 64
