Ceremony

Thirty years since its original publication, Ceremony remains one of the most profound and moving works of Native American literature, a novel that is itself a ceremony of healing. Tayo, a World War II veteran of mixed ancestry, returns to the Laguna Pueblo Reservation. He is deeply scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese and further wounded by the rejection he encounters from his people. Only by immersing himself in the Indian past can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. Masterfully written, filled with the somber majesty of Pueblo myth, Ceremony is a work of enduring power.

Trick or Treat Stories

Welcome, Fear-Fiends, to blood-chilling Monster Mansion…home to Gruesome Ghoulies, Demented Demons and Things That Go…Bump!...in the Night! Bwahahahahahahaaaaaaa! It was 1862 and what a year it was. A man by the name of Jesse Wells was about to become a legend, but not the kind a legend to be proud of. Jesse had a mean temper, and when the Saloon doors swung open things got quiet, and people scattered. Jesse would enter the Saloon, and spit a wad of tobacco juice on the floor, and shoot his six- shooter in the air, and say, "Where's my whiskey?" The bartender would rush over, and hand a bottle over to Jesse, and run back to the bar in fear for his life because he was the third bartender that replaced the other two that were shot dead by Jesse Wells for not tending to his every need. As Jesse was walking past a table of men playing poker one of the men at the table started laughing at Jesse and Jesse said, "What's so funny?" Right before the man had a chance to answer Jesse he shot the man right between the eyes, and said, "Anyone else thinks it's funny?" The men just sunk in their chairs, and Jesse kicked the dead man out of his chair, and sat down, and said, "Boy's you ready for some poker?"

This unholy alliance is further exacerbated by a crossing of the streams, which propels Hartwell's sire to engage the group in the battle of their paranormal lives. When Prof. Hughes accidentally vaporised the University of Birmingham School of Metallurgy and Materials Science, and couldn't be found afterwards, his students thought the only consequence would be the cancellation of his notoriously hard end-of-year exams. However, for first year astrophysics student Eradani, this is just the start of a fantastic (and seemingly preposterous) science fiction caper involving alien worlds, reversing spaceships, invisible trees and an annoying geographer called Andrew. And as if that weren't enough, it also turns out that the fate of the entire Galaxy rests on her shoulders...

Steel: And Other Stories

Imagine a future in which the sport of boxing has gone high-tech. Human boxers have been replaced by massive humanoid robots. And former champions of flesh-and-blood are obsolete . . . . Richard Matheson's classic short story is now the basis for Real Steel, a gritty, white-knuckle film starring Hugh Jackman. But "Steel," which was previously filmed as a powerful episode of the original Twilight Zone television series, is just one of over a dozen unforgettable tales in this outstanding collection, which includes two new stories that have never appeared in any previous Matheson collection. Also featured is a bizarre satirical fantasy, "The Splendid Source," that was turned into an episode of The Family Guy. Richard Matheson was recently inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Steel demonstrates once again the full range of his legendary imagination.
