Horton Halfpott; Or, the Fiendish Mystery of Smugwick Manor; Or, the Loosening of M’Lady Luggertuck’s Corset

Tom Angleberger's latest, loopiest middle-grade novel begins when M'Lady Luggertuck loosens her corset (it's never been loosened before!), thereby setting off a chain of events in which all the strict rules of Smugwick Manor are abandoned. When, as a result of "the Loosening," the precious family heirloom, the Luggertuck Lump (quite literally a lump), goes missing, the Luggertucks look for someone to blame. Is it Horton Halfpott, the good-natured but lowly kitchen boy who can't tell a lie? Or one of the many colorful cast members in this silly romp of a mystery.

An Inspector Calls

Charlie Horse has very set ideas of just how his pub should be run. No food (apart from crisps and nuts) and very definite ideas about what kind of customers are welcome in his hostelry.Until one day an inspector calls...Please note this is a short story and is quite difficult to categorise - there are slight elements of fantasy (although it has a contemporary setting) as well as a smattering of mystery, and also is intended to have a slight Pratchettesque feeling to it.

The Pride of Jesse

A proud young man thinks he has the world by the tail until he is paralyzed from the waist down from a car crash on the San Diego freeway. His plans for the future he thought he had are turned up-side down, he resorts to alcohol to feed his bitter soul and finds an unexpected friend in a co-worker who struggles to pull him out of his darkest days.**Please review this book**In my poems, I want to emphasize that, first love may not be the lady whom one kisses for the first time or with whom one has slept for the first time in life. A wife is, normally, not the first love of her husband, nor the first lady to be kissed by her husband nor with whom her husband had slept for the first time. Only a very few lucky wives can claim to be the first love of her husband and first for other actions of a male and female.

The Magic Tower and Other One-Act Plays

Here are portraits of American life during the Great Depression and after, populated by a hopelessly hopeful chorus girl, a munitions manufacturer ensnared in a love triangle, a rural family that deals “justice” on its children, an overconfident mob dandy, a poor couple who quarrel to vanquish despair, a young “spinster” enthralled by the impulse of rebellion, and, in “The Magic Tower,” a passionate artist and his wife whose youth and optimism are not enough to protect their “dream marriage.” This new volume gathers some of Williams’s most exuberant early work and includes one-acts that he would later expand to powerful full-length dramas: “The Pretty Trap,” a cheerful take on The Glass Menagerie, and “Interior: Panic,” a stunning precursor to A Streetcar Named Desire. The plays include:* • At Liberty • The Magic Tower • Me, Vashya • Curtains for the Gentleman • In Our Profession • Every Twenty Minutes • Honor the Living • The Case of the Crushed Petunias • Moony’s Kid Don’t Cry • The Dark Room • The Pretty Trap • Interior: Panic • Kingdom of Earth • I Never Get Dressed Till After Dark on Sundays • Some Problems for The Moose Lodge*

Circus Maximus

Buddy Hazelton, chairman of the Brandenburg College philosophy department, quit his job to join the Waverly Brothers Traveling Circus. Later today, the authority on Ludwig Wittgenstein's linguistic theory is being shot from cannon. In this deeply sardonic debut collection of short stories, Jarod Powell masterfully intertwines the bitter traumas and sweet victories of humanity with a hypnotic style, subversive wit, and a powerful, concrete narrative. A hopelessly dysfunctional family holds a formal debate and fights through the cliché, an agoraphobic teenager finds the gumption to enter the world he observes in a single moment of guttural rage, a homeless man harasses a stranger with his visions of the San Fernando Valley as The Garden of Eden, and in the title story, a high school turns into a Biblical village square when a drug overdose turns a nobody into a mythical being.

Drawing the Moon

This short dark fantasy story originally appeared in the anthology Bruce Coville's Book of Nightmares, published by Scholastic Inc."Andrew knew that the moon had stolen his parents away."He tried to explain to Elizabeth once, after the funeral, but she didn't understand. Her face turned horribly pale, and she whispered, "They're dead, Andrew. Don't you know that?" And then, just in case he didn't, she drew him a picture. She used her red pencils, and some of Andrew's crayons, besides. She used rusty-red for the brick buildings, brownish-red for the mugger's jacket, rosy-red for Mom's torn sweater on the sidewalk. And bright red for Dad, where the knife had gone through his chest."Andrew tore the drawing up—not because looking at it sent icy shivers up his spine, though it did—but because she'd gotten the drawing all wrong. She'd left out the moon, large and round in the night sky, and that was the most important part."
