Enter Mirkwood, the Great Forest of Doubt Bold new author Steve
Hillard's wildly original debut, Mirkwood, re-invents J.R.R. Tolkien as a
man haunted by the very myths he rewove into his famous works. As much
literary criticism as boisterous epic, this episodically-driven plot
explores the blurred borderlands where ancient tales, lost heroines, and
epic journeys are stalked by dim monsters that will not be still. In
1970, Professor Tolkien makes a little-known visit to America-and sets
in motion elvish powers embodied in a cache of archaic documents.
Destinies are altered, legends become real, and two heroines must race
for their lives in vastly different worlds. Views: 22

In Hard Work, he tells the story of his life, from his turbulent childhood through a coaching career with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. and in a new afterword, Williams takes us past the two NCAA Championship titles to the subsequent season, with its shake-up losses and the unexpected departure of key players, to a new season coaching some of the most dazzling players in the country to an ACC regular-season championship.Williams recounts how he recruits, teaches, and motivates his players; how he's shepherded teams through some of the most nail-biting games at both Kansas and UNC; and how he coached his team through one of the roughest seasons of his tenure and came out the other side to be awarded 2011 ACC Coach of the Year. So far, the Hall of Famer has coached in seven Final Fours, winning two NCAA championships within five seasons. Views: 22

Much to her surprise, foster care survivor Madison Rose has finally found a family of her own. Unconventional as it may be, living and working as a live person within the Los Angeles vampire community has given Madison a sense of belonging and of being loved that she hasn’t felt since she was a small child. But when she discovers a dead body floating in the Dedham pool, she isn’t sure what to do. Because of risk to the vampires, she can’t very well call the local police, and the Dedhams and the other vampires won’t be available until sundown. Turning to the one live person who can help, Detective Mike Notchey, Madison puts out an emergency call. But when the dead body begins to move, Notchey can’t get there fast enough. The body in the pool isn’t just dead, it’s undead, belonging to Keleta, a young vampire who has been nearly killed and dumped into the lap of the Dedhams. Keleta doesn’t remember much about what happened to him and convalesces under the watchful eye of the local vampire council. When another body is dumped into the Dedham pool, this vampire isn’t so lucky. He doesn’t make it and his death kicks the council into high gear to find out just who or what is murdering vampires. And why are the victims being discarded at the Dedham home? The only clue linking them is a brand at the small of the back of both Keleta and the dead vampire – a brand also worn by Doug Dedham and Colin Reddy. The brand is the calling card of Ann Hayes, the femme fatale vampire who branded them just before turning them into vampires centuries before. Found and brought before the local vampire council, Ann Hayes declares her innocence with flair and disdain for their authority, claiming she “stopped branding when the Prince of Wales married Wallis Simpson.” But can they believe her? Has Ann returned with a hidden motive, that of reclaiming Doug Dedham? Or is Ann being set up by someone else? And if so, is the perpetrator a vampire with a grudge or a beater, a living person, who knows too much about the vampires? When Samuel La Croix, the head vampire, calls on Madison to help the council with the investigation, she runs afoul of both Detective Notchey and Colin and uncovers the truth behind Notchey’s personal grief. A vacationing soldier in Hawaii... Earth's most active volcano, anxious to repeat itself... Two murders involving love, madness, friendship, hippies, tsunamis, and the great hereafter... DEATH BY FACEBOOK by Everett Peacock Be careful what you say online REVIEW: A wildly inventive story about love, madness, friendship, hippies, tsunamis, murder and the great hereafter all in a vivid tropical setting. It is funny, fascinating and touching. If you have never been to the Big Island, this book will make you want to go. If you have been there, this will make you feel like you have returned. The perfect book for a hammock and a tall drink.Review"This is an unusual book. Not really what I was expecting, but not in a disappointing fashion, quite the opposite." - V. Cano "This book floored me from the first few pages. A very serious and well-presented plot made me realize Peacock had gone in a totally different direction...a ghost story, and a non-conventional one at that." - Christopher Pinto, author of Murder Behind the Closet Door"I would recommend this book for anyone wanting something fun to read. It also makes you think about how our online presence will live on after we are gone. " - Kathi KellenbergerFrom the AuthorLike the other half billion or so people using Facebook to keep in touch with friends, family and business I was reading a stream of posts one afternoon. Nothing unusual, just the steady flow of clever statements, complaints about the weather, about being sick, being in love, being lost. One such person I had added to my "friends" list was a girl from high school I had known, not very well, but enough to say hi on Facebook. She was an active poster with more "friends" than most and you could tell she lived a great deal of her life online, on Facebook. On this particular afternoon she had posted about being sick with the flu and I scanned her last post with the same disinterest that I did about other such complaints. However, the next day she was posting again, except this time it wasn't her doing the writing. It was her husband using her log-in to tell her friends that she had died during the night. He expressed how much his wife had enjoyed her social life with her Facebook friends, how she would come to bed at night relating all the wild and crazy stories she'd heard there. He signed that last post with his name and I naturally never saw another from her.Facebook, of course, is just a another tool humans use to communicate. It was this lady's death though, announced online that cemented it in my mind as a tool that had grown up, one that was perfectly suited to announce such a finality. And, it became clear to me that with such maturity it was also a tool that could be expressed with a darker purpose.Everett PeacockFebruary 27, 2011Kula, Maui, Hawaii Views: 22
