The Martian Epic

The Martian Epic, written in 1921, is a ground-breaking novel on several levels. First, as a sequel of sorts to H.-G. Wells' War of the Worlds, which is treated here as a prophetic vision heralding the all-out, destructive Martian attack of 1978. Second, as a post-cataclysmic epic, in which a handful of scientists battle hordes of cannibals and anarchists roaming a devastated Earth, while trying to rebuild its civilization. Finally, as a startlingly original cosmic saga, in which souls travel inward through the Solar System to end up one with the Sun--the true reason for the Martian invasion.

Epic Fail

At Coral Tree Prep in Los Angeles, who your parents are can make or break you. Case in point: As the son of Hollywood royalty, Derek Edwards is pretty much prince of the school--not that he deigns to acknowledge many of his loyal subjects. As the daughter of the new principal, Elise Benton isn't exactly on everyone's must-sit-next-to-at-lunch list. When Elise's beautiful sister catches the eye of the prince's best friend, Elise gets to spend a lot of time with Derek, making her the envy of every girl on campus. Except she refuses to fall for any of his rare smiles and instead warms up to his enemy, the surprisingly charming social outcast Webster Grant. But in this hilarious tale of fitting in and flirting, not all snubs are undeserved, not all celebrity brats are bratty, and pride and prejudice can get in the way of true love for only so long.

The Obsolete Soul

Mark's career at the advisory office is at a standstill, his relationship with girlfriend Ella is quietly capsizing, and he's beginning to discover strange blanks in his memory. Plus his goldfish are missing. As Mark's increasingly frequent episodes of amnesia begin to take on a life of their own, he finds himself battling the threat of an unexpected leap in human evolution. Is the Rabbit really cleverer than the Monkey? What is the moral of the story? Like other parts of the world, Mozambique has a rich oral literature of animal fables. Grandmothers still tell them to children, and the children respond in a chorus with the magical word "Karingana!"It would be sad if this heritage disappeared entirely in the face of modernization, so teachers are being encouraged to record it, in English and Portuguese, and hopefully later in its original Bantu languages as well. There is no reason why school children should not use materials from their own culture as they learn to read, thus bridging the gap between home and school. I have seen how students come to life and participate when traditional stories are welcomed into the classroom, so this book ends with some suggestions for ways to do this.
