Holidays in Heck

Holidays in Heck takes the reader on a globe-trotting journey to far-reaching places including China, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and the Galapagos Islands. The collection begins after the Iraq War, when P.J. retired from being a war correspondent because he was "too old to keep being scared stiff and too stiff to keep sleeping on the ground." Instead he embarked on supposedly more comfortable and allegedly less dangerous travels - often with family in tow - which mostly left him wishing he were under artillery fire again. The result is a hilarious and oftentimes moving portrait of life in the fast lane - only this time as a husband and father of three.

The Black Jacket Mystery

There was a small branch lying at one side. It was only about twenty inches long, and someone had cut all the side twigs off it. Trixie picked it up, curious as usual. It came from a crab-apple tree. There was a dark stain on the heavy end of the piece of wood. And caught in the grain of the wood was a small tuft of gray hair. The stain could only be blood. . .. 0-307-21541-5

Righteous Indignation: Excuse Me While I Save the World!

Known for his network of conservative websites that draws millions of readers everyday, Andrew Breitbart has one main goal: to make sure the "liberally biased" major news outlets in this country cover all aspects of a story fairly. Breitbart is convinced that too many national stories are slanted by the news media in an unfair way. In Righteous Indignation, Breitbart talks about the key issues that Americans face, how he has aligned himself with the Tea Party, and how one needs to deal with the liberal news world head on. Along the way, he details his early years, working with Matt Drudge, The Huffington Post, and so on, and how Breitbart developed his unique style of launching key websites to help get the word out to conservatives all over. A rollicking and controversial read, Breitbart will certainly raise your blood pressure, one way or another.ReviewRighteous is three books in one, each self-contained. Together, they weave a narrative that will remind many readers of their own lives. Even if you don't share all of Andrew's political beliefs, you will find yourself identifying with at least some of his story and conclusions. The book is part biography, part history lesson, and part manifesto, and it flows with clarity of purpose from one page to the next. It subtly draws you into a narrative, strung through the whole book, where he meticulously makes the case against the media and pop culture, which, he argues, help spread and normalize the liberal agenda. He also explains how to combat that agenda. (The Daily Caller )Right smack in the middle of this volume is where Mr. Breitbart's narrative takes off like a rocket. The chapter "Breakthrough" is in and of itself well worth the price of "Righteous Indignation." (The Washington Times ) About the AuthorAndrew Breitbart is the creator of Breitbart.com, Breitbart.tv, Big Hollywood and Big Government. His new website, Big Journalism, launched in December 2009. His websites get millions of hits everyday.

Siesta Lane

A poet at heart, Amy Minato rejects her life of consumption in Chicago to go back to nature—specifically, to a commune in Oregon, where she rediscovers herself. She also cops occasionally to the pretentiousness of her mission, and laughs along with the reader at her attempts to be both environmentally-friendly and sane, considering the fact that she's moved in with a bunch of strangers in a remote locale. Jan Muir, a relative of the great environmentalist John Muir, lends her beautiful black-and-white illustrations to the bookWritten with a grace and clarity of vision reminiscent of Annie Dillard's prose, Siesta Lane is both a practical case study in living green, and the heartwarming story of a modern idealist who dives head-first into the fray and discovers just what it takes to live a year unplugged. This is a must-read for armchair adventurers and a perfect, engaging primer for anyone who wants to stride confidently into the new, environmentally-conscious...

Blood Bank

All of Tanya Huff’s short stories featuring homicide cop turned P.I. Vicki Nelson, her partner Mike Celluci, and vampire Henry Fitzroy."This Town Ain't Big Enough" is a sequel to Blood Pact, where Vicki has to deal with another vampire encroaching in her territory. Suspenseful and intense, this was probably my favorite short story. "What Manner of Man" takes place in Henry's past, where he tries to track down a spy. This was another fun one with plenty of intrigue, in the Regency era setting. "The Cards Also Say" is another that follows Blood Pact. This time, Vicki hears an ominous message from a psychic. "The Vengeful Spirit of Lake Nepeakea" follows Vicki and Mike to a remote lake that the locals say harbors a monster. This story had plenty of humor surrounding the mystery. "Someone to Share the Night" stars Henry who begins to feel a little lonely, so he takes out a personal ad. "Another Fine Nest" involves Vicki and Mike tracking down blood-sucking underground bugs. This was very suspenseful, with a high "ick factor." "Scleratus" is a darker story, where Henry remembers his bloody past. "Critical Analysis" involves Vicki and Henry trying to solve an impossible murder. These are always my favorite kind of murder mysteries. "So This Is Christmas" throws Vicki into the role of Scrooge for this entertaining holiday tale.
