The Whore and her Mother: 9/11, Babylon and the Return of the King

The Hebrew prophets; Isaiah, Jeremiah, Habbakuk & apostle John in The Revelation; wrote extensively about a latter day city & empire which would dominate, exploit & corrupt all the nations of the world. They referred to it as Babylon the Great, or Mega-Babylon, & foretold that its fall, 'in one day', would devastate the economies of the whole world. Have these prophecies been fulfilled already?

Falling to Earth

As command module pilot for the Apollo 15 mission to the moon in 1971, Al Worden flew on what is widely regarded as the greatest exploration mission that humans have ever attempted. He spent six days orbiting the moon, including three days completely alone, the most isolated human in existence. During the return from the moon to earth he also conducted the first spacewalk in deep space, becoming the first human ever to see both the entire earth and moon simply by turning his head. The Apollo 15 flight capped an already-impressive career as an astronaut, including important work on the pioneering Apollo 9 and Apollo 12 missions, as well as the perilous flight of Apollo 13. Nine months after his return from the moon, Worden received a phone call telling him he was fired and ordering him out of his office by the end of the week. He refused to leave. What happened in those nine months, from being honored with parades and meetings with world leaders to being unceremoniously fired, has been a source of much speculation for four decades. Worden has never before told the full story around the dramatic events that shook NASA and ended his spaceflight career. Readers will learn them here for the first time, along with the exhilarating account of what it is like to journey to the moon and back. It's an unprecedentedly candid account of what it was like to be an Apollo astronaut, with all its glory but also its pitfalls.

A Beautiful Lie

An extraordinarily rich debut novel, set in India at the time of Partition. Although the backdrop is this key event in Indian history, the novel is even more far-reaching, touching on the importance of tolerance, love and family. The central plot focuses on Bilau, a boy who is determined to protect his dying father from the realities of the unrest and upheaval on the eve of Partition - the riots, the bloodshed, the aggression. With great spirit and determination, Bilau persuades the whole of his village to collude with him in this deception, even going to the lengths of printing false pages of the newspaper to hide the ravages of unrest from his father, thus allowing his father to die at peace. An atmospheric, quirky and moving debut novel, set in India. Shortlisted for the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize This is Irfan Master's first novel and has been shortlisted for the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize. After Midnight

Sanna and her ravishing friend Gerti would rather speak of love than politics, but in 1930s Frankfurt, politics cannot be escaped--even in the lady's bathroom. Crossing town one evening to meet up with Gerti's Jewish lover, a blockade cuts off the girls' path--it is the Fürher in a motorcade procession, and the crowd goes mad striving to catch a glimpse of Hitler's raised "empty hand." Then the parade is over, and in the long hours after midnight Sanna and Gerti will face betrayal, death, and the heartbreaking reality of being young in an era devoid of innocence or romance. In 1937, German author Irmgard Keun had only recently fled Nazi Germany with her lover Joseph Roth when she wrote this slim, exquisite, and devastating book. It captures the unbearable tension, contradictions, and hysteria of pre-war Germany like no other novel. Yet even as it exposes human folly, the book exudes a hopeful humanism. It is full of humor and light, even as it describes the first...
