He’ll let her have control…until he’s ready to make his move. The only things Lily Harris inherits after her father’s untimely death are debt, scandal and loneliness. Jake may be as compelling to look at as a marble statue—and stir a frighteningly powerful desire within her—but no way will Lily agree to be his socially acceptable bride while he continues to bed his string of beautiful women—not without getting him to agree to a deal of her own first. With a well-earned reputation as a feral hunter who goes after what he wants, Jake has his sights set on Lily, and her lack of options puts her right where he’s wanted her from the first moment he laid eyes on her. Jake’s not above making Lily think she’s having it her way if that’s what it’ll take to have his way in the end. But once he grows tired of playing beast to her beauty, he’s not above changing the rules of the game until they’re both playing for the same prize. Warning: This title contains a hero used to getting what he wants, a heroine determined not to give in to him, some indecent proposals, a fair amount of pride, and enough passion to burn up everyone’s control. In The Friend of Madame Maigret, Simenon's economic prose brilliantly portrays the Marais quarter of Paris and those who haunt its narrow streets as Inspector Maigret attempts to prove that a murder has actually been committed without a corpse anywhere to be found. As the investigation becomes increasingly complex, seemingly unconnected characters are drawn into the case, and Maigret begins to wonder if his wife's earlier strange encounter with a woman and her baby may be the missing link. Gabriel Rush is a broken man.Once a dedicated cop and family man, he is now little more than one of the walking dead. Busted out of the ranks of New York’s finest, he’s been reduced to P. I. work - of the sleazy variety - until he takes a photograph of a sad-faced woman in a café which, when he develops it, reveals on odd pattern on her cheek. The mark is the signature mutilation of the Trinity Killer, a brutal murderer who has New York living in fear. As the mystery deepens, he discovers that the killer's fate is bound inextricably to his own past and future. Trying desperately to warn the woman, Rush finds himself haunted by visions and fighting to save the woman he loves, his friends, and—when the killer's identity is finally revealed—his own sanity.Previously published in the United States in 2001 as The Secret Life of Colours, The Last Angel is a unique fusion of crime, horror and angelkind that is quite unlike anything you have ever read."Shocking, sacrilegious and strangely satisfying," – Cemetery Dance.“You can't read The Last Angel in a faded state of mind; Savile wants you to experience more. And experience you will every tint and shade you never noticed before. Some you never wanted to notice. Enjoy the pleasure of Savile's prose and the amazing breadth of his ideas. However you read it, you're never going to forget Trinity.” – SF Site“Steven Savile writes with a lyricism and versatility that marks him immediately as a writer to be treasured on your shelf. Savile has, with his Native American detective Gabriel Rush, offered up a character scarred with tragedy and frailties, the sort of man we can admire and pity in the same breath. Perhaps the second most important character in the novel is New York City herself. David Fincher would be the ideal director to take this novel to the silver screen - the mix of sepias and grime contrasted surreally with the occasional colour lens of the killer's point of view, lend the novel a unique backdrop, utterly different from the New York you might have visited with other writers, yet identifiable nonetheless.” – Caio UK Views: 41
Car mogul Daniel Walker is celebrating New Year’s Eve alone. Or at least he thinks he is. At midnight, he runs outside naked for a quick roll in the snow. But when he tries to get back in the house, he can’t. He’s been locked out. From Publishers WeeklyAt the start of Logue's tepid eighth mystery featuring Pepin County, Wis., deputy sheriff Claire Watkins (after 2008's Point No Point), Dan Walker, who's been celebrating New Year's Eve alone in his cabin's new sauna, finds himself locked out of his cabin after a brief naked roll in the snow. Subzero temperatures ensure that he's frozen stiff by the next morning. Miraculously, Dan revives, but is unable to recall what happened to him, though it appears someone deliberately locked him out. Suspicion falls on Dan's soon-to-be-ex-wife, Sherri, as well as his spoiled daughter, Danielle, but other suspects soon emerge. Meanwhile, a possible change in Claire's long-term relationship with Rich Haggard, among other personal issues, complicate Claire's hunt for who wanted Dan dead. Series fans may enjoy the rough Wisconsin winter and revisiting old friends, but Logue fails to generate much suspense or excitement. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From BooklistIt is New Year’s Eve in Pepin County, Wisconsin, 20 below zero with lots of snow. Daniel Walker is relaxing in his sauna, enjoying a bottle of vodka and a cigar and contemplating a new land deal and a divorce. At midnight, he leaves the sauna for a nude roll in the snow, but when he tries to get back inside, the door won’t open. When his soon-to-be-ex discovers him frozen in a pile of snow the next morning, she calls for help and the paramedics take him to the hospital to see if he can be saved. Sheriff’s investigator Claire Watkins has to figure out whether the incident was an accident or a crime. Daniel Walker made many people unhappy: his wife, his daughter, those on the wrong sides of his land deals. As she investigates, Claire ponders her own relationship with boyfriend Rich. After the death of her husband many years ago, she has been hesitant to remarry. The freezing weather echoes the relationships in this story. Some are frozen, while others, previously icy, show signs of thawing. A satisfying entry in a consistently entertaining series. --Barbara Bibel Views: 41
