1925 - Millionaire's Secret Seduction

A multimillion-dollar family dynasty was hard to walk away from. And that's what Dominic Hardcastle intended to do. Until he met his father's employee Bella Andrews. She was intriguing and sexy beyond reason... and out to ruin his estranged, ruthless father. So Dominic offered to keep her secret if she'd keep him company...after hours.Everything about Dominic set off alarms in Bella's head. For he had the power to destroy her plans. Maybe some intense overtime with Mr. Tall, Dark and Dangerous was needed. Suddenly her scheme didn't seem so simple...or her heart so safe....From the Publisher"Get out before I call security!" The woman's voice rang across the large space. Dominic Di Bari blinked in fierce light that poured through a wall of windows. Apparently she had no idea who he was. He took a step forward. "I said--" "I heard what you said." He could just make out a figure at the far end of the room, small in the cavernous space. "I don't believe we've met." "The sales training conference is on the fourteenth. This is fifteen." She strode toward him, heels clicking on the marble. He squinted, but still couldn't see much. She had a white lab coat on. Computers and other high tech equipment punctuated long countertops. A white marble floor magnified the late afternoon sunlight blasting in through the windows. "Is this some kind of lab?" "I hardly see that it's any of your business." "A week ago, I'd have agreed with you." Before the strange phone call that turned his life upside down. "I warned you I'd have to call security." She pulled a phone from a pocket in her lab coat. He couldn't help but notice that her legs went on almost forever. She dialed the number and tapped her foot on the floor, looking anywhere but at him. He crossed his arms and fought a smile that kept trying to sneak across his mouth. Judging from those legs he'd bet there was quite a body hidden under all that white Permanent Press polyester. Straight brown hair with natural-looking gold highlights grazed her shoulder as she pressed the phone to her ear. "Yes, Sylvester, there's an intruder on fifteen. I've asked him to leave but he won't." She shot him a hostile glance. Gray eyes. "Thank you, I'd appreciate that." She snapped her phone shut. "Security will be here in a few moments. Now is your chance to exit with dignity." "Dignity can be so dull." He leaned against the door frame. Her anger lit her cool eyes and hardened the determined set of her chin. "Are you a researcher here?" "As it happens, I'm an Executive Vice President in the cosmetics division." She pursed her lips. "Interesting." So Tarrant's eye for the ladies extended to those he picked to run his company. This woman didn't look a day over twenty-five. Obviously legs trumped experience around here. Hardly surprising, given what he knew about Tarrant Hardcastle, the jerk DNA tests had proved to be his biological father. He heard an elevator open behind him. "This is him." She pointed a long, graceful finger at him. No nail polish. Shouldn't she be wearing some if she was VP of cosmetics? "Mr. Hardcastle." The friendly middle-aged security chief who'd been instructed to give him the run of the building gave a little nod. Dominic knew he should correct him. He'd been Dominic Di Bari his whole life and he had no intention of changing his name now to suit some egomaniacal billionaire who needed an instant son. But right now being Mr. Hardcastle suited his purposes. Her pretty pink lips parted. "What?" "You heard the man." Dominic shifted his weight. "Sylvester, is there a problem?" "Ms. Andrews mentioned an intruder." "I think there's been some mistake." Dominic spoke slowly, and let that smile he'd been fighting pull his mouth upwards. "Dominic." He held out his hand for her to shake. She stared at it in horror. Then she stepped forward and shook it. "Bella Andrews. I had no idea. I must apologize. We deal with a lot of sensitive material in this lab and we can't have strangers..." she trailed off. "I quite understand." Her skin was soft and smooth--as it should be, given her chosen profession. Her palm heated against his as he held her hand a couple of beats longer than was truly polite. Her gray eyes gave away nothing of her thoughts. When he let go of her hand she pulled it back fast and turned to the security guy. "Thanks, Sylvester, sorry to have bothered you." They stood in silence while Sylvester made his exit. He could almost feel her burning curiosity as a palpable force in the chemical scented air. He smiled, as if to invite her most probing questions. "You're one of Tarrant's relatives?" Her skin colored after she asked. "His son." Flawed

"You can waste a lot of time looking . . . or you can pay me to find it for you." So goes the slogan of Brodie Farrell's one-woman detective agency. Although Brodie has made some surprising---and dangerous---discoveries while working as a modern-day treasure hunter, none of them has turned her life upside down in quite the way that her unexpected pregnancy does. The timing is particularly awkward because Brodie has recently separated from her partner, the prickly Detective Superintendent Jack Deacon. To complicate matters further, Detective Inspector Alix Hyde has set her sights on Deacon while simultaneously trailing a mysterious criminal---and one-time friend of Deacon's---Terry Walsh, who has a habit of springing surprises of his own.As ever, Brodie's best friend, Daniel Hood, will do anything to help her---even taking a leave from his beloved teaching job so that he can look after her business while she takes care of the baby. But soon Daniel is preoccupied with the well-being of young Noah Selkirk, who seems to be collecting more bruises than is reasonable even for a twelve-year-old boy, and is strangely linked to the Walsh case as well. . . . As their entanglements weave together in complex patterns, all of the parties have to face the consequences of their own mistakes. But it's the flaws that make all of us human---and perhaps that ultimately make us stronger. From Publishers WeeklyIn Bannister's emotionally weighty seventh Brodie Farrell mystery (after 2006's Requiem for a Dealer), Farrell panics when her unexpected pregnancy threatens the continued success of her business—Looking for Something?—an eclectic problem-solving agency in Dimmock, England. One of her paramours, mathematics teacher Daniel Hood, delays his return to the classroom to serve as her assistant and eventual caretaker of the company. When a former student happens by, Hood soon determines that the boy is being beaten at home and quickly identifies his father, affluent and powerful attorney Adam Selkirk, as the guilty party. The bulk of the plot centers on Hood's amateurish efforts to intervene in the dysfunctional Selkirk family and Farrell's conflicted attitude toward the men in her life. Readers will be most satisfied if they approach this as a novel that happens to involve a criminal investigation, an impression enhanced by Bannister's quiet prose style and emphasis on relationships. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From BooklistBannister's latest Brodie Farrell mystery is chockablock with plots, subplots, and sub-subplots. But Bannister skilfully weaves the disparate story lines together and offers up an intriguing, thoroughly entertaining read. When Brodie discovers she's pregnant with the child of her former lover, Detective Superintendent Jack Deacon, she's shocked and overwhelmed. Brodie's friend, math teacher Daniel Hood, steps in to support Brodie, which he's more than willing to do since he's been secretly in love with her for years. Brodie's ex-lover Jack faces his own problems: Detective Inspector Alix Hyde from the Organized Crime Agency is sent in to bring down local Mob boss Terry Walsh. Nailing Walsh could be Alix's ticket to her much-desired promotion, and she doesn't care who she steps on (Jack), insults (Jack), or uses to get what she wants (Jack, again). But the most poignant subplot focuses on Daniel's discovery that one of his former students is being abused by his father, a high-powered London lawyer. A masterfully written story that is as provocative as it is engaging. Melton, Emily

To Heaven by Water

Now that his wife is dead, retired television news anchor, David Cross, believes that he is more himself than he has been for forty years. When Nancy was alive, he had secrets that he kept from her. Now he has a secret that he must keep from his children, Ed and Lucy, namely that he is in some ways happier now than he was when their mother was alive. To Heaven by Water is a touching and hilarious portrait of the Cross family, trying in their own fashion to come to terms with their loss. David knows that his children are perplexed by his increasingly compulsive behaviour while Ed's marriage to the lovely Rosalie, a former ballet dancer, is suffering strain, and Lucy is being stalked by her ex-boyfriend. Both children worry that their father will soon find a new partner. Over all three of them hangs the memory of Nancy. The book opens as David is taking time out with his brother in the Kalahari Desert, re-living his tumultuous and uplifting memories of Rome where he worked on a film with Richard Burton. Back home in London, Ed is trying to balance his affair with a young woman in his office with his real love for his wife, who is unable to conceive the child she longs for. And Lucy, who has just been voted No. 6 in the Evening News section devoted to beautiful and brainy women, is a young woman in pursuit of her real self. To Heaven by Water is a wonderful story of friendship, forgiveness and of love that comes from unexpected directions; it is an exploration of what we might hope for from this life and. in particular. the possibility of transcendence.
