One Night Stands; Lost weekends

SUMMARY: In the era before he created moody private investigator Matthew Scudder, burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr, sleepless spy Evan Tanner, and the amiable hit man Keller—and years before his first Edgar Award—a young writer named Lawrence Block submitted a story titled "You Can't Lose" to Manhunt magazine. It was published, and the rest is history. One Night Stands and Lost Weekends is a sterling collection of short crime fiction and suspense novelettes penned between 1958 and 1962 by a budding young master and soon-to-be Grand Master—an essential slice of genre history, and more fun than a high-speed police chase following a bank job gone bad.

Selected Tales (Oxford World's Classics)

Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic tales have established themselves as classics of horror fiction, and as the inventor of the modern mystery, Poe created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. Attentive to the historical and political dimensions of these very American tales, this new selection of twenty-four tales places the most popular--"The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," and "The Purloined Letter"--alongside less well-known travel narratives, metaphysical essays, and political satires.

Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet

"Joanne Proulx's debut novel is an impressive literary feat. Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet is a pitch-perfect glimpse of that powerful yet paradoxically fragile moment in adolescence when the world is rushing at you and you are rushing at it."—Katharine Weber, author of Triangle "Proulx is . . . a talented inhabitor of people unlike herself . . . every new writer so blessed should be cherished."—Toronto Star "A narrative rippling with the author's insight slyly encoded in the hormone itch and cooler-than-thou posturing of a mixed-up teen. . . . Beguiling."—The Globe and Mail "Joanne Proulx's debut novel rocks, and her teenage protagonist, Luke Hunter . . . rules. . . . This is a great book."—National Post (Canada) "A contemporary coming of age story that feels authentic to its times. It has some rough language and doesn't shy away from depicting the kinds of things that a lot of teens do—in...

Can she learn to live with the past so that she and Benjamin can find happiness in their future?About the AuthorAs a child, I still recall sneaking a flashlight into bed so that I could finish reading under the covers a book from the school library before it had to be turned in the following day. Then as a teen, listening to the English teacher read aloud Johnny Tremain by Ester Forbes to the class. Everyone, myself included was mesmerized discovering how a fictional boy from the Revolutionary War is maimed for life following a tragic accident. I still recall the gasps in the room by my classmates as the bandages were taken off of Johnny s wounded hand and he discovered that that his fingers had grown together. As I studied my own fingers, imagining what it must look like to have web hands, I understood fully the significance of weaving a good tale a tale that could take the reader on a holiday for the mind. It is my sincere hope that as you read the third installment to the Doves Collect series you will be swept away to another place and time and fully enjoy finding out more of the lives and times of these fictional characters in America s most tumultuous time in history. Best regards, Linda Daly
