The Death Artist

"One hell of a fiction writer." — Stephen King First published as a limited-edition hardcover, The Death Artist collects 12 unforgettable tales that define the state of the art in modern horror. His nightmares and fears are intensely personal, and his genius is to make us realize that we share them." — Karl Edward Wagner "Etchison is good. Really good. In fact, he reminds me of the early Richard Matheson Sr., who was so unbelievably precise in his psychological attack that you could hardly catch your breath...THE DEATH ARTIST is downright dazzling." — Harry Shannon "Exquisitely well-written and stunningly original." — Publisher's Weekly Contents: The Dog Park (British Fantasy Award, Best Short Story)The Last ReelWhen They Gave Us MemoryOn CallDeadtime StoryCall HomeNo One You KnowA Wind From the SouthThe ScarThe DetailerThe Dead CopInside the Cackle Factory

Spook

Starred Review. Roach made an exceptional debut two years ago with Stiff—it might seem a hard act to follow. Yet she has done it again: after her study of what becomes of our mortal coil after death, she now presents an equally smart, quirky, hilarious look at whether there is a soul that survives our physical demise. Roach perfectly balances her skepticism and her boundless curiosity with a sincere desire to know. She ranges into the oddest nooks and crannies of both science and belief (and scientists who believe), regaling the reader with tales of Duncan Macdougall, a respected surgeon who weighed consumptives at their moment of death to see if the escaping soul could be measured in ounces, and of female mediums who, during séances, extruded a substance called ectoplasm from their private parts (she even examines a piece of alleged ectoplasm archived at Cambridge University). She goes to school to learn to be a medium, subjects her brain to electromagnetic waves to see if they induce the experience of seeing ghosts and joins a group trying to record sounds made by the spirits of the Donner party. The text is littered with footnotes: tangential but delicious tidbits that Roach clearly couldn't bear to leave out. She is an original who can enliven any subject with wit, keen reporting and a sly intelligence.

A Cat Named Darwin

Bill Jordan's life changed forever the day a stray cat nesting under his bougainvillea bit him on the hand. A reformed biologist, Jordan had no particular love for animals and felt vaguely contemptuous of those who did — until the cat, beckoning with a wink and a yawn, led him on a journey to exotic lands, strange cultures, and fascinating discoveries. As their bond deepened and the cat's health began to fail, Jordan was forced into a commitment more devoted and sincere than any he had known before.Puzzling through his own feelings, he came to some remarkable conclusions: that those we love live in the synapses and molecules of memory, and that as long as we exist, they exist as part of our brain. It doesn't matter to our neurons whether the loved one is animal or human; the mechanism is the same. Even so, the two relationships are quite different: A cat is a creature with whom one shares solitude; with a human being, on the other hand, solitude generally means a...
