Beast of Dreams

2834 A.D. Karrick Logan was only a small cub when his pack cheated death, barely managing to land on the planet Eridani after their spaceship was sabotaged. Their human "cousins" had begun to fear and resent the physically superior wolfan subspecies they had genetically engineered, and had plotted to wipe them out. Now, thirty years later, Karrick is leader of the Wolfan Psi Pack; his pack is unique among the wolfan in that they can communicate through dreams. Some of them, including Karrick, can merge so seamlessly into another person's dreams that they can glean information and manipulate thoughts. After years of isolation, a small spaceship has brought a human female to Eridani. It's up to Kerrick to determine if she presents a danger to his pack. He intends to merge his mind with their lovely visitor to determine her purpose in visiting his home. In their shared dreams, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to her, realizing that he's found his mate. When the two meet for the first time, dreams and reality merge with explosive results.

Flesh and Blood

Matt’s home life is falling to pieces as his mother seeks refuge from divorce by returning to the seaside town where she grew up. Separated from his friends, bored and discontented, Matt gradually becomes aware that his mother’s family are the keepers of a terrifying secret.“Gifford infuses the novel with fresh twists and endows his characters with a vivid realism ... a sober, well-paced and genuinely frightening horror novel. If there is a fright-fan of 14+ in your life (who you would like to keep awake for a night or two), this will be most gratefully received.” Inis magazine “...an excellent piece of quiet horror with the occasional really nasty moment.” Atu XVIII Book Review Site “Piggies was certainly good, but Flesh & Blood marks an advance on it ... an effective horror story that could well appeal to a wider audience than its targeted one, though anyone too squeamish should beware some parts of it.” The Zone “An even better novel than Piggies, which was pretty damn good ... Excellent stuff. I hope there’s more!” infinity plus “Nick Gifford creates a vivid and disturbing world... Although the publisher describes this as a horror story it does not adhere to the traditional recipe ... what is more scary than goblins and ghouls about this plot is the believable predicament Matt finds himself in ... I enjoyed reading this novel and feel it appeals successfully to a wide age range.” Children’s Books UK “Another great teen thriller.” Spot On “The pacing and plotting in this novel are superb. Twists and surprises occur at unpredictable intervals. And the ending is a blend of hope and menace ... achieves a level of excellence equivalent to one of Ramsey Campbell’s books, neither condescending to his youthful readers nor slighting his adult ones. Now, that’s a truly scary accomplishment!” Asimov’s SF Magazine **

The Humiliation of Hannah

In a time when women are expected to know their place, this tale of desire and surrender is steeped in the sweet romance and the ruthless brutality of an uncivilized time. With her parents gone, Hannah Crowe feels responsible for her post-adolescent siblings. Life would be much easier if her brother Beau and sister Jolie were not always getting into trouble, causing conflict between Hannah and husband, Daniel. His prescription for these misdemeanors is a turn in the woodshed, strap in hand. In the latest scuffle, Daniel gives the reckless Jolie over to Judge Boone, whose courthouse discipline sees the young maid half stripped before an audience and punished with a tawse. But when Hannah attempts to rescue Beau - against Daniel's wishes - it's Hannah who's off to the woodshed, later serving time naked in the yard, tethered to a post. Extreme? Maybe. But the infuriated Daniel refuses to back down. When Beau's bad debts to a unscrupulous swindler, Jarrett Cain, mount, it's Hannah being harassed. She cringes at his sleazy insinuations, but she doesn't dare tell Daniel. Jarrett and his boys soon show up at the farmhouse while Daniel's away, with plans to take their payment in sex from both Hannah and Jolie. When Hannah resists, both women are forced against the kitchen table and soundly whipped; then while Jolie watches in horror, her sister is anally raped. Believing she has betrayed her husband, Hannah is shamed beyond belief and again refuses to tell her husband. She makes Jolie swear to keep the awful secret. Days later, Hannah is kidnapped and taken to Cain's ranch, where she's displayed, tormented and humiliated in the pony ring, then is the victim of a gang rape by Jarrett and his men. Though deploring the vile things these men do, a strange sexual satisfaction brews in her when she's so unmercifully used. Could it be she finds a depraved satisfaction in these obscene sexual acts? Finally freed, Hannah can't go home and face Daniel. She thus serves penance at Miss Mamie's Whorehouse, cooking, cleaning and spreading her legs for Jarrett whenever he's there to use her. Hannah knows this is her fate, even as a determined Daniel intends to find her and bring her home.

The Road Not Taken

Britain has not been successfully invaded since 1066; nor, in nearly 1,000 years has it known a true revolution - one that brings radical, systemic and enduring change. The contrast with Britain's European neighbours, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Russia, is dramatic - all have been convulsed by external warfare, revolution and civil war and experienced fundamental change to their ruling elites or social and economic structures. Frank McLynn takes seven occasions when Britain came closest to revolution: the Peasants' Revolt of 1381; the Jack Cade rebellion of 1450; the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536; the English Civil Wars of the 1640s; the Jacobite Rising of 1745-6; the Chartist Movement of 1838-48; and the General Strike of 1926. Why, at these dramatic turning points, did history finally fail to turn? McLynn examines Britain's history and themes of social, religious and political change to explain why social turbulence stopped short of revolution on so...

The Signal Flame

In his essays, he filters his personal stories through the full power of his impressive intellect to reflect on American society. But one issue has always evaded his penetrating self-reflection—and that was his own abuse, a subject that brought feelings of shame and humiliation. In Heavy, Laymon writes eloquently and honestly about the physical manifestations of violence, grief, trauma, and abuse on his own body—and the collective body of the Black community. He also chronicles his attempt to lose 100 pounds, an effort at which he fails. He speaks to his two aunts, his...
