Absolute Certainty

Rose Connors brings a fresh voice, a dynamic storytelling power, and a passion for the law to her compelling crime fiction debut. Martha Marty Nickerson is a lawyer who truly loves her job. As an assistant D.A. for Massachusetts’s Barnstable County, which includes all the small towns on Cape Cod, she speaks for the victims of crime and their families, and sees the system as a means for doing right. The case of Manuel Rodriguez is a prime example. Rodriguez is accused of brutally murdering a college student, a kind young man who had a bright future. Marty has worked hard on this case; as the mother of a teenage son, she identifies with the murdered boy’s grieving parents. Her case against Rodriguez is so solid that even public defender Harry Madigan -- the champion of the Cape’s underdogs -- expects a conviction. And, on Memorial Day, exactly a year after the crime, the verdict comes in: guilty as charged. Justice prevails. Then, with Rodriguez behind bars, another body turns up in disturbingly similar circumstances. Did Marty and her colleagues target the wrong man? Her supervisor -- Geraldine Schilling, who aspires to be the county’s first female D.A. -- refuses to reopen such a high-profile case. Why should she? The prosecutors played by the rules and won big. But Marty fears that the real killer will strike again. With her career on the line and lives at stake, Marty must rely on her own moral compass, legal savvy, and gut instinct as she matches wits with a twisted killer. The system itself is on trial as Marty tries to serve Justice, not merely the Law. Only an author with years of courtroom experience could add such riveting authenticity to a novel that asks important questions and provides surprising answers. Rose Connors’s Absolute Certainty introduces a new crime-writing star.

The Ultimate Revenge

The Ultimate Revenge is the explosive conclusion to "The Simon Trilogy" that has held political thriller readers tightly in its grasp. The author's earlier books, Brotherhood Beyond the Yard and Noble's Quest, provide an exhilarating platform for the launch of this final chapter of a gripping narrative that challenges the reader to put the book down. The ever-elusive Simon's daring escape from a high security prison allows him to add unheard of dimensions to the classic cat and mouse game he has played with Noble, the SIA Director. The manhunt for Simon engages two geniuses and a collection of talented operatives, all immersed in a chase with more twists and turns than a rodeo bull. In the process chicanery and double-dealing at the highest levels is unfolded, continuing some of the manipulations of the earlier books.

Lou Mason Mystery - 01 - Motion to Kill

Joel Goldman makes a remarkable debut with this legal thriller packed with high-octane action and impeccably rendered detail. ### From Publishers Weekly Only a few months after Lou Mason joins the Kansas City law firm Sullivan & Christenson, the firm's rainmaker and senior partner, Richard Sullivan, turns up dead. At the same time, Lou learns that the attorney general suspects the firm and one of its top clients of fraudulent business dealings. As the newest partner and the one most removed from the scandal, Lou is asked by his old friend and partner, Scot Daniels, to ward off the feds, but he soon finds information that may incriminate Scot and another of the firm's partners. Meanwhile, Sheriff Kelly Holt, a "slap-on-the-cuffs dream come true" beauty who is curiously inept, suspects Mason of Sullivan's murder until someone tries to kill Mason. To prevent further attacks against his person, Mason hires his friend, PI Wilson Bluestone (Blues), to act as his bodyguard. With a hit man on Mason's tail and Blues and Holt providing backup, the action accelerates and the fight scenes multiply. First-time author Goldman does an admirable job of maintaining the novel's high tension, but his apparent contempt for his characters, and for corporate lawyers in general, will distance readers from his protagonists. Nevertheless, Goldman's secondary characters particularly Blues and a twisted hit man add flavor to this mediocre thriller, and a series of fierce action scenes carry the reader toward an electrifying denouement. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. ### Review When two of his partners are killed, corruption, sex and murder fill trial lawyer Lou Mason’s docket as he tracks the killer. Will Lou be the next victim? Find out in Motion to Kill. Electrifying. ---Publishers Weekly Lots of suspense and a dandy surprise ending. ---Romantic Times Legal mystery fans will be delighted. ---Nancy Pickard

The Yanks Are Coming!

Patton, Douglas MacArthur, George C. Marshall (of the Marshall Plan), "Wild Bill" Donovan (future founder of the OSS, the World War II precursor to the CIA), Harry S. Truman, and many other American heroes earned their military spurs in "The Great War"Why, despite the efforts of the almost absurdly pacifistic administration of Woodrow Wilson, American involvement in the war was inevitableHow the First World War was "the War that Made the Modern World"—sweeping away most of the crowned...

Salamander

Spellbinding, original, Salamander careens through a world of ideas and stories in which the transforming power of books, the thirst for knowledge, and the pursuit of immortality become erotic. It is also a universal story of love and obsession. Set in the eighteenth century, the narrative revolves around a world-spanning quest for the infinite book. Along the way the novel gathers stories that range from a Chinese tale of jealousy and lost love to the remarkable history of Alexandria's other great library and to epoch-making moments on the battlefields of colonial America. At the centre of the novel's unforgettable cast of characters is the London printer Nicholas Flood, a dedicated craftsman who is unprepared for all that awaits him when he accepts an unusual commission. Intricate, humane, infused with humour and pathos, Salamander is an exhilarating, elegantly crafted novel. From the Hardcover edition.
