A Superior Death

Park ranger Anna Pigeon returns, in a mystery that unfolds in and around Lake Superior, in whose chilling depths sunken treasure comes with a deadly price. In her latest mystery, Nevada Barr sends Ranger Pigeon to a new post amid the cold, deserted, and isolated beauty of Isle Royale National Park, a remote island off the coast of Michigan known for fantastic deep-water dives of wrecked sailing vessels. Leaving behind memories of the Texas high desert and the environmental scam she helped uncover, Anna is adjusting to the cool damp of Lake Superior and the spirits and lore of the northern Midwest. But when a routine application for a diving permit reveals a grisly underwater murder, Anna finds herself 260 feet below the forbidding surface of the lake, searching for the connection between a drowned man and an age-old cargo ship. Cool Shade

This well-loved classic won the RITA for romantic suspense.Cool Shade is a Contemporary Romance, which means it contains sex scenes. Heat index: 6 out of 10 Jobless, broke and anxious for a change of scenery, disc jockey Maddie Smith decides to visit her flaky, estranged sister in Nebraska. But she finds that after a brief encounter with reclusive Eddie Berlin, her baby sister has vanished without a trace. Now it's going to take every last one of Maddie's wiles, feminine and otherwise, to get close enough to Eddie to discover what has happened, and to resist his mesmerizing allure, which may be just as dangerous as it is enticing.Amazon.com ReviewMaddie Smith has never been one to hang around any place too long. After losing her job as a late-night disc jockey, she has little reason to stay in Tucson. When she receives a message that her estranged sister has disappeared, she figures she might as well go to Nebraska and see what's up with her unreliable sibling. There she learns that her sister is linked to the mysterious Eddie Berlin, a recluse and a very sexy guy. Maddie takes a personal interest in Eddie as she searches for clues about the disappearance of her sister. Meanwhile, Eddie is shouldering problems of his own. The former manager of a pop star killed by a crazed fan, Eddie feels responsible for the singer's death, and as a result, he hasn't wandered off his own property in more than four years. Still, he is attracted to Maddie, experiencing feelings he thought he would never know again. A stolen tape of a recording made by the late rock star and other clues bind the couple together. It soon becomes clear that these two deserve each other, and when they finally feel comfortable with the fit, they find they are greater as a pair than they could ever have been as individuals. The encounters between Maddie and Eddie are anything but typical. Both are insecure, yet somehow they manage to muddle through. Author Theresa Weir has created them to be very human, characters the readers feel connected to as they witness their lives unfold. ReviewAll About Romance Desert Isle Keeper.  Grade: ARomance Writers of America RITA Winner. This is my favorite Theresa Weir book -- and that's saying a lot because she's really good. She is not a typical romance writer. When her characters make a mistake, it's not because she's trying to make the book longer -- their mistakes grow out of their personalities. If you like music, and sensitive heroes, and people with quirks, you'll love this book. There are lots of surprises and some big secrets. I'm not sure which is more intense, the style or the love scenes. Anne M. MarbleThis book won the RITA award and deservedly so because this is one of the best romances I've ever read. I think it also could have been published as fiction but it's on the line genre-wise. It also combines suspense but without murdering anyone! It's a total original. This author will next be appearing on the Mystery section here, instead of romance, so keep her in view and track down her books, both past and forthcoming! Anne M. Marble, one of my FAVORITES here at Amazon, also reviews this book, so take the link at the top left of this page, to her site. Carol Irvin.
