The twelve stories in this anthology are some of the most riveting narratives penned by Macario Pineda in a writing career that lasted for less than two decades. Retold in English by Ms. Soledad S. Reyes, Macario Pineda’s Love in the Rice Fields and Other Short Stories offer readers a series of scenes in which various characters come alive in their respective journeys through life’s various stages—the idyllic innocence of youth, the pleasure and agony of young love, the disillusionment of old age, and the experience of death. Each story slowly leads its characters to an epiphany, for example, of the unconditional nature of a mother’s love, of war and its evils, of death and what possibly transpires after. In this collection of short stories, Pineda is the consummate chronicler of the barrio, a gentle historian, a masterful painter, a great Filipino artist who painstakingly depicted the varied aspects of the past he loved—an age slowly... "Hats off to one of the most inventive writers of French literature. . . . Hubert Haddad concocts a colorful novel, funny and inventive, as clever as the Fox sisters themselves."—Jean-François Delapré, Saint Christophe bookstoreThe Fox sisters grew up just outside of Rochester, NY, in a house that had a reputation for being haunted, due in large part to a series of strange "rappings" or "knockings" that plagued its inhabitants. Fed up by whatever was responsible for the knockings, the youngest of the sisters (who was twelve at the time) challenged the ghost and ended up communicating with the spirit of Charles Haynes, who had been murdered in the house and buried in the cellar. Thanks to the enthusiasm of one Isaac Post, the Fox sisters became instantly famous for talking to the dead, launching the Spiritualist Movement in the US. After taking Rochester by storm, the sisters moved to New York where they were the most famous mediums of the time,... Views: 41

It all started with a game of Truth
or Dare…
It’s bad enough I got arrested for prostitution on Christmas
Eve. Alleged prostitution, mind you. I didn’t do it. Of
course I didn’t. The cops say I offered up a certain sex act for a
$5 gasoline gift card, but honey?
My sex acts are worth way, way more.
So when I tried to explain what happened to the person who came
and bailed me out of jail, she wasn’t exactly impressed.
Because it was my boyfriend’s mother.
Now, I got two boyfriends, so Murphy’s Law said it had to be the
mother I hate the most. And she hates me right back. Even more now
that I lost her son.
That’s right. Where in the hell are Joe and Trevor? It’s
Christmas Eve, and I keep getting pictures on social media showing
Joe and Trevor all oiled up in g-strings that look like candy canes,
dancing with a bunch of well-coiffed older women.
I, on the other hand, am wearing Santa pants, flip flops, and
smell like jail cell pee.
That game of Truth or Dare turns out to be way more dangerous than
anyone expected.
And our savior? It ain’t the baby Jesus. Not the three wise men.
No little drummer boy. Not even the donkey that carried the Virgin
Mary on its back while she howled for an epidural.
Nope. Can you guess?
That’s right.
Mavis the Chicken.
Can she help us out of this clustercluck?
