When Dreams Tremble

Leslie Harris's visit to her upstate New York lakeside family home after a decade of triumphs and disappointment resembles a nightmare more than the quiet vacation she'd herod for. The unexpected appearance of much-changed town ero girl Devon Weber, with whom Leslie shares a secret that haunts them both, rekindles an old heart ache—and reminds Leslie of just why she left. Even though her attraction to Dev comes roaring back, the one thing Leslie doesn't want is to pick up where they left off, especially not when she already has just the life she wants—a rewarding high-power law practice, a condo in Manhattan, and a lover who satisfies her without demanding the intimacy Leslie avoids. Unfortunately, environmental biologist Devon Weber doesn't play by Leslie's rules. Two women whose lives turned out far differently than they'd once imagined discover that sometimes the shape of the future can only be found in the past-and love is strongest When Dreams Tremble .

Trouble

Annette Horrocks has every reason to be happy. She lives in a lovely London house with her devoted husband, Spicer; her first novel is about to be published; and after ten years of trying, she is finally pregnant. But Spicer is cruel and distant. He used to dismiss psychiatry, yet now he spouts New Age astrology and accuses Annette of murdering his inner child. Worse, Annette's friend Gilda discloses that Spicer is having an affair. Annette thinks she is going mad, and that's not even the end of it. Trouble is fay Weldon's bracing, enticing return to the vengeful mode of The Life and Loves of a She-Devil—and a reminder that, while marriage has been a nightmare through the ages, now husbands have psychiatrists to make it worse. From Publishers WeeklyPregnant and about to publish her first novel, Annette Horrock finds that her husband is making her seemingly perfect life a perfect hell. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library JournalThe prolific British author easily entices her readers into feeling sympathy for Annette, who has been happily married for ten years to Spicer, a wine merchant. She is pregnant with their first child and also about to deliver her first novel when the trouble commences. Influenced by a New Age astrologist/psychiatrist he once would have scorned, Spicer becomes increasingly abusive toward his wife. Annette is transformed into a type of woman familiar to Weldon readers: someone so intensely focused on maintaining even a bad relationship that she is unable to see the harm she is inflicting on herself. Not quite as funny as such earlier works as The Life and Loves of a She-Devil ( LJ 11/1/84) but still recommended for most collections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/93.- Faye A. Catwatching

Desmond Morris is a professional zoologist and studied animal behaviour with the famous Dutch ethologist Niko Tinbergen at Oxford University. He then moved on to become Curator of Mammals at London Zoo, where he established his own behaviour research group. Although for the past twenty years he has in his books (from The Naked Ape to Bodywatching) concentrated on the human species, his professional eye has constantly been focused on animals and their fascinating behaviour. The most recent fruits of this interest are the bestselling Catwatching ('No cat lover should be without it." – Doris Lessing, New Scientist) where he answers the following questions and many more:Why does a cat purr? Why does a cat like being stroked? Why does a cat tear at the fabric of your favourite chair? Why does a cat roll over to lie on its back when it sees you?Why does a cat rub up against your leg when it greets you?Why do some cats hop up on their hind legs when greeting you?Published by Jonathan Cape Ltd, 1986 This disk version of 'Catwatching' has a hard page break before each new question. Your computer's search facility should enable you to find the title of a question. From Library JournalIn each of these books by the author of Bodywatching an introductory essay is followed by a question-and-answer section (items one to four pages in length). The questions include ones about mating, hunting behavior, and physical characteristics. Morris writes very well, and his answers are often witty as well as informed. Nearly any reader would find these books interesting. Unfortunately, all of Morris's information is available from such other sources as encyclopedias and general dog and cat books, so a purchasing library is getting little new for its money. If your budget permits "extra" buying in the pet area, do acquire these books. Your readers will like them. But if the budget is tight, they are marginal purchases. Susan Matusak, Wilson Coll. Lib., Chambersburg, Pa.Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product DescriptionThis book, the first in the popular Watching series, explains everything from why cats purr to why we say it's raining cats and dogs. 26 black-and-white photographs.
